    for some reason all my xvid-files have been "corrupted". at least that's what bsplayer and wmp claims. if I open in bsplayer, a message will say "file is corrupted, seeking will be slow" and then the video plays back, but without audio. and if I open it in wmp I'll just get the corrupted error and no playback at all...I have tried reinstalling the codec, but it's the same. and I know all those files are not suddenly corrupted. please help...

    edit:

    these are not files made by me, it's from all over the place, and they've worked perfectly until a few days ago

    Sounds like your Codec is corrupted

    Try FFDSHOW

    XviD is just a video codec by the way, it has nothing to do with audio.

    You might want to try remuxing the files with say VirtualDub Mod or AVIMuxGUI. They are avi files aren't they?

    I do have ffdshow, maybe it's been corrupted?

    edit:

    tried reinstalling ffdshow too, didn't help. could this be a conflict of codecs somehow?

    edit2:

    tried rendering some files in g-spot, got this message:

    DirectShow was unable to render the file. Following is the error it reported:

    0x80040265: VFW_E_UNSUPPORTED_STREAM - Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported.

    here's the codec-info:

    video:

    The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:

    --> {XviD MPEG-4 Codec}
    --> {DivX Decoder Filter}
    --> {DivX Decoder Filter}
    {InterVideo MPEG4 Video Decoder}
    --> {XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder}

    Nonetheless, DirectShow is apparently NOT able to play this file. (see "DirectShow Render", below). No further information is available concerning the apparent discrepancy

    audio:

    Audio Format:
    Code: 0x0055
    Name: WAVE_FORMAT_MPEGLAYER3 (MP3)
    Vendor: ISO/MPEG

    The following codecs all claim to be capable of processing this format:

    --> {Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec (advanced)}
    --> {LAME MP3 Codec v0.9.0 - 3.97 (alpha 4)}
    {ffdshow Audio Decoder}
    --> {MPEG Layer-3 Decoder}

    DirectShow was UNABLE to render movie overall however, see the DirectShow details for more info

    ok, I have one more lead here. all the files that don't play the audio are encoded with vbr mp3
