  1. If the specifications of a DVD player saids that it supports DivX, does it means that it also supports Xivd?

So can I play a Xivd movie ina DVD player that supports DivX??

    Thanks in advanced,

no -- it would ussually also have to list XVID (rare i believe still)

  3. But both codecs are based on the MPEG-4 compression standard.

    Does this matters?

    Thanks,

  4. Most currently available divx players support xvid. If you find a player that doesn't you can probably just change the fourcc code from xvid to dx50 (both are MPEG 4 codecs).

Yes. They are enough similar, that taking an XviD and changing the header to read DIVX instead of XVID with fourcc changer might make the DivX capable player play the XviD. But if it's not in the specs, you can't yell at anyone if it doesn't work.

  7. Not all "Divx certified" dvd players will play Xvid without a hitch. First, if the Xvid file is encoded with multiple consecutive b frames that can bork playback, as can wheather or not packed bitstream was used. Also, some players are just now coming out that are supposed to support GMC, but they only support 1 warp point not 3 warppoint like Xvid uses.

It is still kind of a guessing game.

  9. Tell me about it. All I want is a networked dvd player that does 720p/1080i upconversion via component or DVI, that also has full support for Xvid ASP and Xvid HD oh and AAC 5.1 plus Vorbis 2ch support...

I thought I had it with the Avel Linkplayer2, but it doesn't seem to give me all of what I want. Maybe if the Bravo D3 ever materializes...

Might want to scan for info on some of the newest ones in the DVD Player section of the avsforum.

  10. Philips DVP642 plays both xvid and divx well.

Of course, not all Divx certified players can play all Divx files without a hitch either.
