I have a analog line in on my JVC DV cam, and I can capture to DV tape or direct to my computer via firewire.
Do I get the same quality if I:
- Capture to DV tape using line in on my camera, and then transfer from camera to computer (firewire)
- Capture direct to computer using line in on my camera (firewire)

The resulting file would be identical. DV is digital so whether you captured to your cam or sent it directly to your computer they would be the same.

New to all this, but if storing on the camcorder first would there be a time limitation vs. feeding directly to your computer? It may not be an issue depending on the length of video you are trying to capture.

I've done it both ways, but usually capture directly to the computer using the camcorder as pass-through. It saves wear & tear on the camcorder mechanics, and saves a step. And as logixrat.01 points out, if you record to tape, you have the limit of 60 (or 80) minutes recording time.

Just one extra point - remember to disconnect the Camcorder from the computer before editing, or remove the DV tape from it, as the editing software you use may try to export to the Camcorder!
