  1. I've downloaded approximately 100 streaming video files from various websites across the 'net, and I'm trying to convert them to VCD so I can view them on my standalone DVD player. Here's some more details before I get to the specifics of my problem:

    1. All files are ASF extension. The video codec used is WMV8. The audio codec used is WMV9.
    2. I recorded these streaming files using Windows Media Recorder. I've tried using ASF Recorder and I couldn't get that to work.

Okay, so here's my problem. On some of the videos, TMPEGEnc locks up (gives no error message) when converting. If a crash happens, it always happens at the same frame of the video. Here is a list of things I've tried:

    1. Loading the file normally into TMPGEnc and converting to VCD. crashes
    2. Loading the file normally into TMPGEnc and converting to AVI. still crashes
    3. Frameserving the video to TMPGEnc using SonicFoundry Vegas and PluginPac frameserver. still crashes
    4. Re-downloading the video from the source website. still crashes at same exact frame
    5. Basic repair of the video using ASF Tools. still crashes
    6. Advanced repair ("fix bad spots" preset) of the video using ASF Tools. ASF Tools returns error "unknown padding flag: 40"
    7. Converting to AVI using ASF Tools. ASF Tools gives warning "file used WMV2 method for video compression. therefore the resulting AVI will not display video"

The only other thing I can think of is to try using a different encoder (either an MPEG encoder or a go-between to a different file format) but I don't know of any others off the top of my head.

If anyone can recommend a good encoder, or any other possible solutions, I would be most apreciative. Thanks much![/list]

  2. I converted wmv and asf to (DivX/MP3) using STOIK Video Converter version 1. I haven't try the version 2 yet. Its a freeware.

I just tried that software. The program didn't crash at the "problem" frame, but when it got to that frame it continued rendering the audio but stopped rendering the video. So the resulting file had the audio correct, but once you move past the problem frame the picture just stayed stuck at that frame.

  4. I had a similar problem with an .WMV file and the only program that got it right was EOVideo. Not even AviSynth could handle the file.

EOVideo crashed even before reaching the frame where the others crashed.

Try ASFTools . It has a number of repair functions.

Also, VirtualDub 1.3 will open ASF files.

Sorry to hear that, pal. I thought I could help with that.

I already tried ASF Tools. Are there any specific repair settings that you recommend?

I tried VirtualDub 1.3 and it wouldn't open the file. The exact error was "ASF: parse error -- too many segments in packet at 1a40 (1 expected) packet size = 79fk, send time 0:01"
