Panda anti virus - came with my mobo, a Linux box as firewall (among other things) - Don't trust s/w firewalls, since if it hits the f/w, it's already inside your box, innit? (Like wearing a diaphragm to avoid being raped?)Originally Posted by 30sauce

Cool list, p_l -- I'm a freeware junkie! Unfortunately, that means I have a ton of software I never use cluttering up my system...
I had read some bad things about AVG, but there seem to be a number of people out here who dig it. Any thoughts on AVG vs. Avast?
Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I'll let you know if this helps...

I don't like AVG myself. I personally have been using Bitdefender Free Edition for over a year now - it's still not well known, but it works very well for me.

I've used AVG on about 10 machines now and never had an issue. 4 of these were my own (so naturally they were well-maintained
), but the other 6 have ranged from a couple of my porn-hungry mates, my parents, and my future in-laws. It's kept out a handful of viruses on the mates' computers by moving the shit to the vault, and then I get a phone call to come and empty the vault
If in doubt, Google it. -
I heard with Avg, You cant go into safe mode with it running, thats a limit to the free version?I have it..LOL ...I never tried..

I started with DVDShrink but found that it choked on a lot of DVDs. I then moved to DVDDecrypter and use Smart Ripper if that fails - one of them always works.
If the decrypting tool of your choice fails to unlock - try playing the disc first in something like WinDVD or PowerDVD. Open the decrypting tool while it's playing, stop playback and try to rip form there.

Okay, I uninstalled Norton and replaced with AVG. Anyway, I'm sorry to say that didn't help. Whole process still took 2hr 50min to rip/bu.
I set this up overnight so I'm not sure where the process is dragging. I know that 'Analysing' phase said it was gonna take about 30 minutes and that it was working at about 3,800kb. Sorry to sound like a complete noob, but is that slow? Any other suggestions on how I can speed Shrink up? Thanks.

Whoooooow 30sauce ! Analysing took 30 mins ??? That should take 1 to 2 minutes !
Break down each stage and how long it is taking so we can see where your problem is. Eg, open Shrink, analysing should be 2 mins, rip to disc should be circa 20-25 minutes. Burn with Nero 20 to 25 mins. Give it like this so we see where the problem lies. -
Sorry if I misspoke -- the initial scan of the DVD (when you first load it into your drive) only takes about two minutes. But then when I press 'Backup' and start the rip/burn process, it starts "Analysing" again -- that's where it took about 30 minutes. Not sure about the breakdown after that -- I usually start it and walk away.
I tried something new last night: I selected the "Enable overlapped I/O" box in Preferences, which I had unchecked via some tutorial. That seemed to help -- got my rip-to-burn time down to a about 1hr 10min (though the DVD I was backing up was significantly smaller than my previous attempts as well).
Probably try another bigger DVD tonight and see if I can watch the breakdown of what processes are dragging. Any other suggestions?

Well, your Shrink timing seems ok. Your Nero burn seems to be taking too long. Have you by any chance set the burn speed , in Nero, to 1X ? (check it) Leave on it Max.
