  1. Have a Canon S70 digital camera that I shot a short clip with and would like to trim a couple of seconds off each end. It's an AVI file but Premiere 6.5 wouldn't open it saying that it didn't understand the compression format. I tried the Canon software that came with the camera but it can't seem to trim.

What's the quickest and dirtiest way to trim this type of clip?

    I have the Canon S1.

I can trim the AVI with DVD Movie Factory.

I didn't transfer the file through the camera.

    I used a card reader.

  3. I transfered it via the card reader too. Does that make a difference?

I don't have the program you mentioned though.

    Hmmmmmmm.........

After I transfered the file via the card reader I dragged
the file from the removable to my hard drive.

It wasn't called an AVI........just a video file.

I was able to open it up as with any other AVI file.

If Movie Factory can open it, other video apps should
    open it too.

When I get a chance I'll try another app. Then I'll edit
    this post with the results.

    EDIT 1..............

Arcsoft ShowBiz opens and plays it.

Sonic VideoFactory 2 opens it but only plays the audio.

    I'll keep trying.

    EDIT 2..............

Pinnacle Studio 8.3 opens and plays it.

If you bought a retail version of your DVD burner a copy of
DVD Movie Factory was probably included (with Pioneer).

    EDIT 3............

Try Honestech. They have a lot of video programs.

I think they have a free trial.

I tried some of their programs, but I didn't purchase them
    because I didn't need them.

I really wish I could help you more.

  9. Well I used Quicktime to do it and it worked well...quick and easy. I also tried MS Moviemaker and that worked. I wonder why Premiere 6.5 has a problem with it?

I really hope you can get everything to work!

One of the reasons I bought the Canon S1 was for
the movie mode. I tried some brief clips and I
    like the camera a lot!
    (I'm using a 1gb card)

    (I don't have Premiere)

    Good luck.

I have version 2 and 3 also. I hate those!!!

In version 1 I would save (make movie) as an AVI.

(If you can find a copy of version 1 you will need the audio patch)

    EDIT...........

I'll try version 2 or 3 to see if there is a work-around.

Okay, I tried it with version 2 and it can be saved as an AVI.

When you have your movie in the timeline, click SHARE at
    the top right.

Next, click CREATE VIDEO FILE at the top left side of the screen.

Next, in the drop-down box, save-as an AVI.

I didn't actually save a file, but only went through the motions.

By the way, you have to be in the Edit Video mode.

If the Digital Media Center screen shows up when you
start the program then we have the same program.

The Edit Video button is on the right side of the screen.

That will get you into the editing mode.

(The program won't start if the screen resolution is too low)

I've never used Premiere. Maybe it needs a plug-in.

(but the Canon file seems to be an AVI)

I needed a plug-in for VideoFactory for mpegs.

    Maybe somebody has an answer.

Trim with Virtual Dub and then and effects, titles, etc. in a Video Maker like VideoStudio 8.0, which will convert it to a DVD acceptable mpg.
