It says VCDs but they don't give you a lot of other info. Do you know who makes it and what their web site is ?

I found another portible MP3/VCD player at http://www.amaxhk.com/products/napa/311/dav311.htm and this one seems more reliable because it has an instruction manual on the site in Word format, zipped up. Reading through it was interesting, I had no idea anything like this existed. One thing I noticed was that some of the text was in a textbox, and if you deleted it, you'd find the Japanese originals behind it. So this is a Japanese product and the manual was just modified to be English... anyone have opinions on this?

I have been checking on this stuff for a while guys and, if you search the forum, you'll find that the general consensus on portable players (especially the NAPA ones) are that they are crap. However, I did get one lead on Logtek players from HongKong. You can get a sample shipped to you for $90 including shipping.

Here is another portable from Archos with MP3, WMV, and MPEG4 video recording and playback on a 10GB hard drive.
It also has expansion modules for additional functionality including Firewire, USB 2.0, SmartMedia/CompactFlash, and 1.3 megapixel digital camera.

I've had a Napa MP3/VCD player for about 6 months and its pretty good. Plays VCDs perfectly and has a handy remote. The MP3 playback is fine plus you get the obvious bonus of 100s of tunes on one CD.
It really came into its own on holiday when I just took a couple of MP3 CDs (25 + albums) instead of the usual bag full. And as I was in Thailand I bought loads of VCD movies for pennies and watched them in the hotel room (in between enjoying the sights, sun and nightlife of course).
My only complaint with my player is its slightly large and average battery life.

In my opinion ...
Napa DAV311 strong points: it exists; VCD playback is great from pressed discs; MP3 capability; rechargeable batteries
Napa DAV311 weak points: size and weight; burned VCD playback is terrible if you don't know how to get around its demanding idiosyncracies; you cannot save your default television system for playback; firmware not upgradeable; MP3 files play back with an unsual echo -- improves some performances while destroying others -
Basically I agree with you AntnyMD but I havent had problems with burned VCDs be they direct copies or ones I've mastered myself.
Not bothered about default TV system as mines is PAL and its set to PAL anyway (but fair point).
I've read about this echo effect and it seems to vary in intensity from player to player and I have only been aware of it a handfull of times out of thousands of tunes.
For what it costs and what it can do I am more than happy.
