    Some DivX files that I converted to VCD are in color when played on computer DVD, but Black & White when played on Philips DVD711. I noticed that the last one that did it was a PAL format (TV and DVD are NTSC), does that have anything to do with it or is it just the DVD player itself?

    Yes, this is a Pal/NTSC problem. You should change the settings on your TV to Pal and look for a little switch on your DVD Player and change that to Pal too. Now your VCD should work fine.
