A friend gave me a set of "Lonesome Dove" VHS tapes for xmas. I thought I can not copy these to DVD because of MV. They were brand new and still wrapped in plastic. I put one of the tapes in a sony VCR connected to L-1 of my DMR-E85H Panasonic and it recorded to the HDD and dubbed to a disk with no problems or change. I guess it obvious they were not copy protected or I somehow lucked up and defeated it. I thought that all the purchased tapes and disks were copy protected.
