IDE problems can occour from incompatible hardware and software, and also the implementation of the chipset on the mainboard, i've got an EPoX 8KTA3 board which has the 686B and i've never had problem burning or ripping.

Hi all,
This is my first post at this wonderful forum, I would just like to share my experience with you all on the toshiba drive.
I have 3 dvd drives toshiba 16x, lite-on 16x, and a delta 12x. Of all the drives I have, the lite-on seems to be the fastest drive in ripping any type of dvd whether encrypted or not. The toshiba really sucks at the encrypted dvds, But the non encrypted ones I average 7x-10x ripping speed. The Delta rips the encrypted and non encrypted dvds at 3x-6x ripping speed.
I use to think it was a bus mastering problem with the via driver but it does not seem to be the case in my experience. I have two computers and I tried to switch the drives around and the toshiba would always rip at 2x speed. Then I was ripping an non encrypted dvd and POW! 10x ripping speed I was so happy I though something just clicked in my computer, but when I put in an encrypted dvd (most studio release dvds) and 2X ripping speed again. I think toshiba designed to drive this way so that it would be harder for people to rip dvds and do things with it.
Sorry to post such a long reply on my first post. Thanks
just beginning to realize the awesome potential of computers -
I own a toshiba 16x DVD, I just fixed my in2k hardware system by flashing my bios.....My dvd maybe ripped and encrypted dvd faster than 2x (with smartripper) but mostly at 2x...unencrypted however,......14x and up....
I just installed the VIA patch or what not and will kepp ya'll posted on if it rips faster becasue...

Caution to anyone who uses motherboards with a VIA chip set. To put it plainly VIA's chip suck!!!. I have been playing with their chipsets for a while and I an having aways having to called to tech suport it get some patch for one thing or another. ie VIA's chip will not work out the box with an Iomega ZIP 100,250 or LS120 drive with out an updated patch's and when you install the patch, your transfer rate on a 100 meg file will still take day's complete. Your best solution is to not by VIA's chip set's
I finally purchased the ASUS Black Diamond motherboard with the INtel 815E? chipset what a difference 100 meg data transfer to a Iomega Zip 100 about 2.5 min's I can live with that. My Ripping speed stay's at about 6.0; as compared with VIA's chipset (Abit,Spacewalker, Shuttle, Matsonic motherboard's) sat About .04 -
I'm not gonna tell anyone what to buy, that's your own personal choice, I can offer my assistance if you are having problems and my experience, and i've been using VIA chipset boards since they came out, sure they had bugs (recent one SBLive/IDE transfer) but they were all fixed, and as for transfer rate speed for ripping, I got on a Duron 700 a 6x to 10x rip speed using a Pioneer 16x drive, so you may have had bad experience, doesn't mean it's bad for everyone.
