Ugh, do take that site seriously when it says it is NOT a good way of doing DIVX.

Sorry for budging in late guys, i've got high fever from flu
djvirus, I never thought i'd get a DivX person to convert to VCD, man, that was a shocker, and do remember, I don't have anything against DivX, I just don't like it
dumwaldo, first you said 10%, now it's 30% ? amazing how that number increased all of a sudden, but how many % of anything except a PC can play DivX ? 0 ? - ? see my point ? oh and by the way, I know for a fact PS2 plays VCD's, cause I got a friend in the US that I make VCD's for, and they play them on the PS2 cause they don't have a DVD Player, now, for both the DreamCast and the PS2, even if they can't play out of the box it IS possible to make them play! how many devices can you do to make play DivX except a PC ? want to give that in % or is it too much of a low number ? even YOU said nearly eventhing can be modified to play VCD, but how many things can be done to play DivX ???
salvius, this is the best forum you'll ever find, cause some people can share their optinions, and that's what this is all about, i'm not trying to force my opinion, if someone accepts it or not, that's their choice, some do, some don't, I don't get money if they do or if they don't (damn!), and the same you said for DivX that it depends on how people encode it, well, same goes for VCD, wouldn't you agree on that atleast ?
Macros746, thank you for again reminding people of what I am trying to say over and over, EACH FORMAT HAS IT'S OWN PURPOSE
mikewg, atleast I can smile, I think all the rest here have just gone bold
pinoy2201, this is all your fault!
Oh and lastly, dumwaldo, i'm glad you don't consider this an argument, cause nither do I, you have your opinions, and I have mine, and i'm glad we get to share them, cause this is what all this is about, sharing and learning new things.

Divx vs VCD...

(A cunning way not to double post, and yes I realise it wouldn't really be a double post).

Why can't we all just get along ?
I think of "vs" situation as a way of giving information to one another.

Salvius:
To make sure, are you talking about the opening line on that site?
"This page is not about getting the very best out of the DivX (tm) avi Codec, it is however, about getting the best from DV handicam source material which has been edited in Premiere 6..."
I get that the article is not about the codec itself but how to get DIVX on a CD R from a DV source and edited in a NLE. So I don't think he said that "it's not a good way of doing DIVX."
Just another choice for target audiences who do not have compatible DVD players for VCD. -
STOP!!!!!!!!!!! guys end this now thit you guys even read the topic VCD OR Divx Not VCD VS Divx

I wasn't going to reply to this thread, but I feel I must. I encode to MPEG1/2 and DivX for different reasons, but I must say that with today's DivX tools, the only reason to encode to MPEG1 (VCD) over DivX is for the set-top player compatability. For everything else, DivX owns MPEG1, hands-down.

VCD and DivX were made for different purposes.
DivX can definitely look better than VCD at same size.
However, VCD have something over DivX which DivX will not overcome for a long time yet -- stand-alone player compatibility.
Sure, you need to get a DVD player, but as someone rightly said, you can also play DVDs on a DVD player. And they play WELL. With VCDs, you can author menus, chapters, etc., and it is all controllable via a remote control.
IMHO, watching a VCD on a TV on a comfortable sofa with a remote it much more entertaining than even the best encoded DivX on a computer screen.
For the cost of a good quality scan converter, you can get a pretty good DVD player. IMHO, a DVD player is much better value for money. Furthermore, you still don't get the interactivity as you do with a VCD (unless even more cost is involved). Even then, that is only YOUR PERSONAL SET UP. What if you want to take your movie to a friend's house?
As for a CD-burner, these are useful for many other purposes. If you are a DivX user, you would probably want to store your DivX files on CD-R as well?
As for the suggestion of VHS compatibility, that is completely irrelevant. You can record the movie from a VCD onto VHS as well.
Just about every DVD player in existence has VCD compatibility. Sure, not all are designed with CD-R/W in mind, but it should be obvious that most people are able to get even these players to read certain brands of media. Furthermore, it is essentially assured that VCD compatibility will exist (and probably improve) in the newer generations of DVD players.
DivX compatibility (for stand-alone players) is not even a concept.
DivX has a lot going for it and it gives excellent quality (better than VCD). However, stand-alone playback and general compatibility is VCD's trumph card. I find it highly unlikely that DivX will ever overcome this problem before VCD's obvious successor becomes affordable and widely used (i.e., recordable DVD).
