  1. I passed my encoded files through PC based utilities called GSpot and YAAI and they both declared the codec as DIVX (I've been using MPEG4 [.AVI mencoder] setting and had no complains about quality). I suppose if I use Xvid mencoder setting that would change? But how does Xvid codec gets installed on theMac if the main page for it: http://www.xvid.org/ doesn't even list Mac version?

Yes, if you choose the XviD preset (it uses the mencoder engine).

you can download it from versiontracker:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25128

the 3ivx codec can decode xvid too.
