How would I go about adding film noise to a movie file in VirtualDub or in TMPGEnc, or with whichever program? Sorry if this has already been answered, but I can't seem to find it around the site.

What kind of video file are you starting out with? What kind of file do you want to produce? Have you got the sound effect or are you looking for an application that has it built in?

You may have to search for a sound file, like the one on this page.

You could frameserve with AVISynth and use something like addgrain. Could also use ffdshow (can also be used with AVISynth) which has various noise filters. Various other decoders also have settings to add noise.

Very nice filter you gave me but it's definitely not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for Film Noise, something more like static from a bad antenna. I am currently checking out AVISynth and ffdshow.

Or do you want noise as "audio"??

I have no clue how to use AVISynth (moron...) and ffdshow seems to not be working, and even if it did, it seems to be only a decoder. I need something like a plugin for VirtualDub so I can add noise and encode that way.

Nice try with the static.mpg but... I need a plugin to add slight static (film noise) to an avi. Not premade static.

    Thanks for trying though.

  9. Adobe After Effects. There are plug ins that will do it or you can do it straight out of the box. Check out http://www.digitalproducer.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=26372
But its not a cheap or easy option.

  10. I can give you one with an Alfa channel, then you can use it as an overlay?

    How do I use that?

Here, this might help you understand more what I want. Be aware it was done in Photoshop, I do NOT have a filter that can do this in video.

You could also try the Noise Generation filter here http://compression.ru/video/noise_generation/index_en.html

Set it to generate pink noise and set the three parameters 50 to start with. Higher becomes very noticable. The other settings allow you to mimic poor quality video, which may be useful to you as well.

    @ p3ngu!n

I know what you mean. There is a software player that has this feature, and
it looks really *real* to me, and is enjoyable when you turn it on. I forget
the players name. I think it's called Zoom or something. Anybody ??

  17. The Divx and Xvid codecs have "film effect" noise generation at their decoding stage. So if your source is one of those codecs you could just enable that setting.

Be aware that adding this type of noise makes your video much less compressible.

ffdshow is much, much more than just a decoder. In the settings there is a whole page for noise, with dust/scratches, vertial lines, etc.

If it is something that ffdshow can decode, then you can just set it up to decode and you will get the noise, otherwise you can set it to process raw video or setup your noise setting, save the image settings as say "noise" and then load it via avisynth using ffavisynth("noise")

  19. Hi-

Both Blockbuster and AddGrain can probably do what you want. They are third party filters for AviSynth. I might recommend AddGrain. You can find them both here (down near the bottom, in the Misc. Plugins section):
