I have read the tutorials, and I'm still having problems. I start to convert and it goes for about 30 secs then freezes up. It locks up at the same point every time. I tried another file and it does the same thing only at a different point. I tried using Virtual dub to pull out the audio and I get some error about .asf files not being supported but this isnt an .asf file. The movie plays fine but I'm having problems converting. Please help.

  2. Stryker,

Even though it may be an avi, it may have been renamed to an avi from asf.

In any event, you could try to locate Virtualdub 1.3c which I believe supports ASFs and then re-encode to a Divx. In the past, I have used Divx 4.01 with mpeg-3 audio for those stubborn files. Afterwards, you should be able to open the file in TMPGEnc and encode to an mpg. I know it takes some work but its well worth it. Hope this helps!

I believe this comes from people trying to share their asf files on some file sharing programs. Not all of them are able to identify asf files so people just rename them to avi. This could be the answer to Daywalker's quote above. Although, I could be wrong.

You were right, I got the old version of virtualdub and it was recognized as an .asf file. Could you tell me how to change it into a useable .avi file using virtualdub? Thanks again.
