  1. I authored a DVD with DVD-lab, with the option checked "force audio for all movies". The sound was a WAV file sampled at 48kHz. I then burned it with Nero.

It worked fine on my DVD player, but when I played it on a friend's dvd player the sound "skipped". Kind of like as if some little gremlin was turning the volume on and off and on and off. Really annoying. The picture was fine.

Is there anythging I can do about this?

Was the audio file sampled at 16 bits or 8-bits? Have had exactly the same result with 8-bit audio files that I forgot to convert to 16bit before the encoding and authoring.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. Good idea. But the WAV files I used were all 16 bit 48kHz.

Try reauthoring with another audio format like AC3 or MP2. WAV (LPCM) is uncompressed and a terrible waste of disc space. Use 48 KHz, 16-bit, 224 Kbps

  5. I have plenty of space on the disc. I am only concerned with quality/performance right now. So would these formats give a better quality and solve the problem of the skipping? or would they simply result in smaller files that still had a skip error on the dvd?

i've had the same problem, it was caused by some dvd players having trouble with certain audio formats, i would use ac-3, it's universally compatible, and because space isn't a problem you can use a high bit rate. i use ffmpeggui, you can go as high as 448 on the bitrate, which is very good quality

It could be the format that's the problem. As far as quality, you'll probably never notice any loss with AC3 or MP2

WAV (LPCM) is obsolete for audio. It was required in the early NTSC definition for DVD audio. Early players were required to support it to be fully compliant.

Nowadays compatibility is more an issue with LPCM than with the other two common formats, and some players could choke on it. Give AC3 a try
