  1. I had a VHS tape converted to DVD. There are a number of files with extensions that are new to me. How can I get these files loaded into a video editing program (i.e. Pinnacle or Ulead)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Presumably the files are .vob, .bup and .ifo which are the files for a playale authored DVD video. To be able to do aything with them you'll need to convert them to mpeg (or better still, avi). See the guides mentioned above.

There are some programs that will accept the vob's for editing directly, and converting to avi will cause a quality drop.
