I had a VHS tape converted to DVD. There are a number of files with extensions that are new to me. How can I get these files loaded into a video editing program (i.e. Pinnacle or Ulead)? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Presumably the files are .vob, .bup and .ifo which are the files for a playale authored DVD video. To be able to do aything with them you'll need to convert them to mpeg (or better still, avi). See the guides mentioned above.
