  1. I am making a DVD for somebody that wants to make it saleable. To do that I told him that he'd have to get the finished product pressed rather than have it on DVD-r/+r; so that it'll work on all players. However, I realised that I know very little about where to go to do this. He doesn't want many copies of this DVD, maybe, 100 to start with. So I was just wondering if anybody who had any experience in this area, could point me in the right direction.

it's going to be really hard to find a pressing plant that will do that small a run, without charging a ton of money - most pressing plants don't want to deal with an order of less than 1,000, it's not cost effective.

a good chunk of what you pay for is setup time and technical work - not the actual materials and pressing. for example, I know a cd-pressing plant that will do 500 cds for $500, or 1,000 cd's for $550. It's not like the material cost on the second 500 went down $450, it's that the setup and tech work is going to run $450 whether you run 1 copy or 1,000.

same with dvd pressing - there's going to be a fixed setup cost, so you might convince someone to press 100 discs, but you will probably pay $10 or more for each one.

if you decide to do dvd-r or dvd+r, Freedom-From records has started a short-run duplication service that will do dvd and cd burns.

  3. Yeah, I was checking into Discmakers and they will do runs of as little as 300, but you'll pay as much as it costs to produce 1,000.

  4. check with www.cdman.com they can do lots of 500 dvd-5's for $1000 for just the disks and 2-color silkscreen. Or upwards of $1700 for the same 500 disks pressed, packaged, and shipped for the money...the whole 9 yards.

The good thing about these guys is that they don't charge for the glass masters.

oh, that's not a problem - if I have stuff done, I'll probably want to do my own custom packaging.

have either of you guys dealt with them before? how is the quality & turn-around time?
