  1. hi everybody , new at authoring.. I use tmpgenc DVD Author..Is it normal that it takes more than 1,5 hour to author a DVD? I record some tv shows from my dvd recorder ,rip them and then use tmpgenc to cut the commercials..
    I have P4 2,2 512 RAM..
I noticed that the cpu usage is 4% at sometimes .Is that normal?

    In a word..."NO".

But with that being said, there are a lot of variables that go into that too.

Motion menus and motion thumbnails take longer to encode.

Number of video files, and number of menus have an time length effect.

Are you reading and writing to the same HD or actually the same IDE channel?

When you cut the commercials, what app do you use to edit the video and what file format do you output it to?

You can save some time by using TMPGenc Plus 2.5 to convert AVI files to MPEG-2 files.
TMPGenc DVD Author likes TMPGenc Plus 2.5 MPEG-2 files. It will save you some time.

To kind of give you a scale, now I use TMPGenc Plus to convert the files, but for a 4.0 GB DVD, one menu, static thumbnails, 4 chapter points it takes my P4 2.666 Ghz with 1 GB of RAM system about 10 minutes.

For a different 4.2 GB video, with 3 video files, motion thumbnails, 4 motion menus (30 seconds in length) and 18 chapter points it takes it about 40 minutes.

I've never checked my CPU %, I figured 10 minutes was pretty good.

Just on a side note, I wouldn't burn with TMPGenc DVD Author, I have it make an ISO, then I burn with DVD Decrypter. I burned on disc with TMPGenc and it was a coaster...never again.

    WOW !

The 'cat is spot on here IMO

Maybe re-encoding the audio from 44.1Khz to 48Khz adds time also ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. actually the files are already mpegs compiliant since i rip the dvd that my dvd recorder creates. Then i just do some menus in the tmpgenc dvd author and cut the comercials with tmpgenc dvd author as well..My recorder captures audio in Dolby digital..Maybe this has something to do with it?do you think that it might reencode the audio?

    HI
the ac3 dd audio should just be passing through and not adding to the time at all, and when i add custom motion backgrounds to my menus it also will take 90 minutes to finish.
depends on how long you make the motion menus, if they run for only 15 seconds it will take less time, if they run for 60 seconds it will take more time. & i also add alot of sub menus, motion TN's, ect.
    & i am also running a 2ghz. try running it on a 500mhz
    you're looking at 8-16 hours
    I've done it before
But northcat_8 is correct in everything he stated, just depends on what all you add but mine usually take that long also.......
