I am using an NEC 3500a in an external enclosure. I tried backing up a DVD with DVDecryter and during the burning processes both the buffer and the device buffer kept fluctuating from 100% to 0% and I checked XP Event Viewer and there was a bunch of device memory errors. Does anyone know why this could be? Any info would be appreciated.

what's the info on your computer hardware? that will be a good start for us to help you.
-
This is a sign that the data can't get from the source to the burner fast enough. More detail about your hardware and exact procedure you're using would help as stated.

I am used a NEC 3500a (216 firmware) in an external enclosure and Ritekg05 media.
I ripped with Shrink and made the image with Classic Img_tool. I tried burning with DVDDecrypter and that is where the trouble started. Every time I try to burn the buffer jump back and forth between 100% and 0%. I rally done know what more info I could give you.
Any help would be appreciate. Thanks.

OK, it's unlikely to be the hard drive so that leaves the burner. Check to make sure DMA is enabled for that drive (do a search for instructions). If it is, I'd suspect the external cable. What type is it, IDE, USB? How long is it? If IDE, rated 100MHz or better? USB 2.0?

There's a good chance it's an issue with your enclosure. When I first got my NEC 2500, I put it in a 'nice' new USB2 enclosure. When I tried to burn anything faster than 4x, I had the same constantly fluctuating buffer and would only burn at about 4x speed. I later tried the drive in an old external USB2 CD burner enclosure, and it now burns perfectly at 8x, and no more fluctuating buffer. The only other time I've had fluctuating buffer issues is when I've had something else memory and processor intensive running in the background, such as trying to run DVD shrink while burning, that can sometimes be an issue. CTL-ALT-DLT and see if you have anything hogging memory or processor in the background, such as an Antivirus program.

Try not to do anything with your computer while it is burning. I found that I can surf the web as long as I don't open a bunch of pages and don't flip around too fast. But thats really about it.

I would not doubt I installed the drive into the enclosures wrong. I never had done it before and it came with no instructions. I did a search on how to do the install, but found nothing.
Was it possible I install the jumper wrong?
Has anyone ever installed a NEC into an enclosure and if so could they give me some advice?
Thanks again. -
The drive itself is IDE, right? Did you use a 100-conductor internal cable? 50 won't work.
What brand of enclosure? model? There should be some documentation for it online somewhere. -
Thanks for yor reply. Here is my enclosure.

I usually run into buffer problems while burning when:
1. I've got certain other application(s) running that conflict with my burning app or
2. I've gone beyond my hd's optimal capacity to hold data. I backup and delete enough data for stable burns. -
That's the same enclosure as mine that I was having the same issues with, minus the firewire. My drive is a NEC 2500. You ought to try the drive installed in your tower, to confirm whether it is the enclosure at this point.

on dvddecrypters forums, theres quite a bit to do with enclosures and there problems,i remember a few pertaining to nec burners, and that pioneers worked slightly better than others.also motherboard drivers were a factor in a couple of solutions too.

Thanks for all you replies.
I am at such a lose. I tried everything I could think of. -
Can't you put your drive in your computer tower?? If it works fine in there, then you can basically rule out almost all possibilities. I'm pretty sure that the same problems existed with my enclosure and Nero, so I'd be looking at your enclosure, whether it be its chipset or the IDE cable inside it. I did not try another IDE cable, though.

Thanks for your advice, steve2713. I placed the drive into the tower and it worked.
However, I need to make it external for work. So, I will try to return the enclosure. Can anyone recommend another enclosure? Thanx again -
Glad to hear you (sort of) figured it out. Like I said, I figured your enclosure may have been the cause. I don't have a suggestion for another enclosure, like I said earlier I'm using an old CD burner enclosure I had, which is working perfectly. When I bought the enclosure like yours, I was under the impression it was a good enclosure, so who knows. I'd call the retailer and tell them of your problems, maybe they'll have a suggestion for a replacement and allow you to return it without alot of trouble. Let us know if you find a good enclosure, I could use another good enclosure.

The funny thing is I finally said 'screw it' and went to put it into my tower. When I opened the case the were no more empty ports on my IDE cable even though I had an empty drive bay. So I could even do that if I wanted to.

I already have 2 drives on 1 cable, but I do see any empty IDE connector. If I were to add another cable and add only that drive to it, do I set the jumper to master or slave? Thanks again
