  1. it seems to me that there maybe several different cases of the ResEvil disc being mastered in different ways.

All of the issues occur with an American release.

We have some one who ripped without issue , someone who cant rip at all etc etc etc.

I suggest a quick experiment, load the disc , run MTR as normal , even thoug it selects ARccOS rip method , force it back into normal full disk mode , this method does contain full dummy vob , and bad sector checking , but takes longer than ARccOS method.

Next ( if above fails ), try a Title/Chapter method extraction , just extract the main feature , this way , MTR will skip the bad cells and start at good ones.

I dont realy like talking about how MTR works on these boards as the nice folk from sony can deduce from these writings how I defeated ARccOS and improve there ARccOS code for the next run.. just makes more work for me.

Just one last point , you state that MTR hangs while reading , dont mistake hanging for reading lots of bad sectors..... you may have to wait a while coz the mac is rather slow at reading bad sectors.. one dummy vob took me 1.5 hours to read ( masses of random bad sectors... ) watch the rom drive for action.....

  2. Thanks for the suggestions, GB, however, I did all of the above to no avail. According to my friend (who finally managed to rip his own damned movie) there are 10,000 dummy files on the disc. I can't confirm this personally, but that's what he said. Thanks for the effort(s), though.

  3. even if there are 10,000 dummy files on the disc , mtr will read over them , you just need to have patience...

That is not possible. You can't copy the encrypted files to your hard drive and then rip them. The key needed to decrypt is hidden on the disc. A ripper hunts down this key. If you copy the files straight to your hard drive, this special key does not get copied with them. Without the key, the files can't be decrypted. You have to rip from the original media.

You can do brute force attacks, but they're not always successful, especially on small VOBs, where the data sample can be insufficient to discover the decryption key (when there are different keys for each VOB, which is sometimes the case). It's generally much more successful to just obtain keys via the drive from the original DVD.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

The disc of this title I have (that MTR was successful with) is a Canadian release (has French as well as English on the disc and artwork).

Which vob on US disc is the dummy one (so I can check and see if I have it)?
