I had to replace my video card when I really didn't want to at this time of year so went cheap. In my price range (<$65 can) the choice was a trailing edge but new nvidia 5700 128mb or an ati 9250 ddr 128mb tv-out (not vivo). I went with the ati because for the same $ it's a superior card I wanted true dx9 which the nvidia really wasn't even though it says it is. I am not a fan of ati and the drivers they gave me on the cd locked my system and I had to boot in safemode and download the latest Nov/Dec 2004 app and drivers. The old ones were dated Aug 2004 but just locked my pc on bootup as the window gui loaded it kept telling me that apps were trying to access invalid vid mem locations. Atter deleting the crap and installing the downloaded stuff it works like a charm. I don't play games but sometimes play with vb dx apps so needed compatibility with dx9.
Anyway my point is like what you say, that card looks similar to mine and if he has the same problem with win98 I say good luck!

I learnt a valuable lesson with computer parts a long time ago - if you don't know 100% how to do it, pay an expert who does. If you don't know what you're doing you'll end up fooking something else up, that could cost plenty more that what you'll pay the expert. If you're lucky, he/she might let you watch what they're doing, so you can learn for next time.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Better check your references. I did a lot of research before buying it. The Sapphire ati card is clearly a dx9 and is documented as such.

Sounds like you did the 'classic' mistake of either:

    a) Didnt unistall your drivers from you last card first..naughty

    or

    b) In the case of a previous ATI card....uninstalled the driver but DID NOT unistall the Control Panel.

    or

    c) a mixture of a and b

PS. 9250's are DX8.1 afaik (but they are dx9 'compatable'.......which means about zero ...as so is a gfx2).

DON"T FORCE IT! Get a bigger hammer! There is a tool for every job. No really it shouldn't be that big of a deal as long as the power is disconnected and you follow all the instructions. If things ain't fitting and you are spooked, then by all means take it somewhere to have it done. It is rare but you may have some bastard setup that we don't know about, or something else could be installed wrong. A real tech should be able to see if there is a problem. There is no shame in trying and failing but it can get expensecive(sp) Don't let all of the greif that everyone is giving you get you down. Get it done right and post back your results. You may be able to tell everybody to bug off, that you had a special non compliant component in the way. Or you may have to admit that it should have been simple like everyone said. Either way it is no big deal. It is hard not to kick someone when they are down around here.

I would shut the computer but leave it plugged in that way you can discharge any body static on the metal frame of the case.

your a) is a non issue since the ati worked fine although limited functionality until I installed the ati drivers and software supplied on the disc and rebooted. You don't need to remove drivers from previous graphics cards. In addition the messages indicated that the drivers were outdated or incompatibale even though they were dated Aug 2004. There was no need to uninstall the control panel until the second install after I downloaded the latest package with a mixture of Nov and Dec dates.

Guess I'll just have to ignore the documentation and information on the box that came with the card. But it sure works great with dx9.

I want to turn my PC on, but I'm afraid if I exert too much pressure on the power button it might push all of they way in and then break off. Then, my PC would stay either on or off forever.

Actually I have only put in the one ATI AIW 7500, and that was way back when it was the cutting edge and high dollar. But I do have to unplug my PC and carry it to the dinning room table to have room to work on it. As for proper grounding or antistatic equipment I don't use anything. To discharge any static that I may have, I just wait until one of the kids comes over to see what I am up to and then I grab one of their ears

That happened to me once. I stood on my head to use my computer for 3 days before I realized my monitor was upside down.

What made you THINK it wouldnt work with DX9.........your mixing up DX software (at the pc end) with HARDWARE (at the gfx card end)...........So stop trying to take the piss eh?..... tosser.

    wtf
Get real! Mixing software dx with hardware acceleration. Good one! very drole!
The only one having a problem is you. I don't give a shit about it. Why do you feel the need to convince me of your expertise on the subject? I accept that you've done some reading I saw the specs on those 8.1 cards too.
I don''t have a gfx so I don't know why you are going on about it?
I don't need info on this, it's not an issue for me.

Hope the original poster is getting something out of this cause I'm not.

Party time everyone's looking for me gotta go
