I recently "moved" some MPEG files from an NTFS hard drive to a DVD+RW (packet writing) and now I find that a couple of them are "0 bytes" on the DVD. The original files were deleted from the hard drive after they were "moved" so how can I recover these files? I have not overwritten anything, but I've tried a couple file recovery programs and I can't find any recently deleted files on the HDD. What am I doing wrong?

Forgot to mention - it's an external drive if it makes any difference.

  3. I would have recommended recovery programs too. You must have had a couple errors while burning. I would recommend trying PC Inspector Smart Recovery if you haven't already, you can find it at www.download.com[/quote]

Tried PC Inspector, gave me a read error about an invalid address. Tried several similiar programs and they couldn't find any recently deleted files, only some deleted ages ago. I didn't write anything to the drive since I found the copying error, so they have to still be there somewhere.

Are you sure System Restore works with files? I thought it only restored installed programs, but I will give a try anyway.

From my understanding of it it restores system settings, but leaves your files intact. But I guess its worth a try.

System Restore did not work. I put the drive inside the computer to see if there was any difference, but none. Any other free programs besides PC Inspector and FreeUndelete? Looks like I will need one that does a sector by sector search. The 2 deleted files aren't worth that much to me, so I don't want to pay for a program.

PC Inspector keeps giving me this message:
Access violation at address 004BD159 in module "filerecovery.exe". Read of address 00000030.

You should try the trial of some of the trialware programs. Usually the trial will at least show you if it can recover a file, it just won't save it. Its worth a shot to see if its even recoverable.
