I have a philips DVP 642k DVD player and recently bought an XMS256 5.1 surround sound system but I am only able to get the 2 front speakers working. The 2 units appear to have compatible connections (fr left, right - surround left, right - centre and sub) and I have gone into the DVD player audio settings and turned off downmixing and set digital output to all. I get a very slight hum from the surround and centre speakers, I get sound from the sub but it doesnt quite sound right(a little distorted)

Anyone offer any advice on what my course of action should be?

    Thanks

  3. perhaps you have your speaker wire connections incorrect? Check to make sure your + and - ends of your wire reach the same connections from your receiver to your speaker. For example, + is red and - is black. If you cross them over at any point that can lead to distortion. Also try the test tone feature of your receiver to test the sound of each individual channel. If you have access to a home theatre setup DVD such as Avia, there are a lot of helpful audio tests there as well. Hope that helps!

    Hello,

ANY THX dvd will have a sound test on it. Like Star Wars or Indiana Jones Go to the setup screen and you will see a small thx logo. From there go to the audio test and you'll get a tone for each of the six speakers. HOPEFULLY it will activate properly.

What tests have you done??? Make sure the optical or coax cable is securely connected and that the receiver is setup to automatically or manaully receive the digital audio (most have at least a manual configuration to select digital inputs ).

My receiver doesnt have any configuration controls or an optical input.

It only has inputs for front left/right, surr left/right, centre and sub and outputs for the same.. My DVD player has RCA outputs for all the same mentioned above..

Just cant get the damn thing to work properly.......
