Azrail, really, your response is several years late. Move on.

I run AVG Free on one of my computers. No Antivirus on the others. Occasionally I'll take the boot drive out of one of the others and scan it on the computer with AVG (all boot drives are in swapable trays). If I download a file an untrusted source I'll place it on a network share and scan it with AVG before using it.
On all computers I run FireFox with cookies disabled (except for chosen sites), NoScript (except for chosen sites), and AdBlock Plus.
I've been doing this for years. Haven't had any problems yet.
<edit>
Oh, I forgot to mention that Auto Insert Notification is disabled on all computers. And of course, the LAN is behind the router/firewall. And if I'm really paranoid about a file I'll run it in a virtual machine.

Hey ... I saw the post on the right side of the main page ... so I clicked it ... to take a look.
Seconds later I looked at the ... date .... 2004 ... I think I looked at the date ... when I saw topic ... talking about ... Windows 2000 ... that was my first clue that this topic ... is old.
Anyways ... what do I use ...
Spybot - Search & Destroy
Norton Internet Security 2007
and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
I do a Dual Boot but WIN 7 is hidden from WINXP ... but sometimes ... once in awhile ... I check the WINXP Drive from WIN 7
OH ... currently ... Norton Internet Security 2010 is on WIN XP ... its a 90 day trial ... should take care of me for a few months ... until I find something else to put on WIN XP ... I just put it on ... a few days ago ... last week.

Don't install two antivirus softwares at the same time. Avast and avira will "fight" each other and cause more harm than good. It is okay to have an antivirus along with malwarebytes though as malwarebytes is an antimalware product. Either remove avast or remove avira. Keep malwarebytes. Stay away from infected sites and don't download players when crap downloads tell you that you need to.
And seriously consider another avatar. That animated gif is really hard on the eyes. Just use a single pic please.Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again") -
Daaaaaaaamn it's been a long time.
I used to live with only 14 gigs of hardrive space? How was that even possible!?!
But while I'm on the subject, I still really use no protection aside from this silly little free software my ISP "encouraged" me to install that doesn't even have a name. It does light virus scanning and has a pseudo firewall.
The funny thing is that in all these years I've never really had a problem with trojans or viruses.
The other funny thing is that I'm a download fiend.
How do I do it? Well, I just set my windows explorer settings to prompt me anytime it wants to do anything.... I mean anything, java, flash, redirect, fart, sneeze, whatever. And usually 80% of the time I don't even need to run the aps. Its amazing how much crap I can intercept and prevent.
Another thing I do is NOT download any porn.
Ultimately, I still keep a two tier system where one partition of my memory is for software while another is for storage. Included there is the installation files for all my software so I can reload at a moments notice. I also pay attention to what the task manager is running every couple of days and investigate if I see anything running out of the ordinary.
With hardrive sizes these days its not feasable to make clone copies anymore so I don't. In fact, I have even less of a safety net for my software now than I did back then (my personal files I backup religiously though). But I figure, by the time I get a virus, I'll want to do a fresh install of everything to get rid of crap I regretted installing along the way anyway. I just backup my separate personal files, nuke drive and start fresh.
And if I ever changed my mind and decided I did want to download porn? I'd use my crappy outdated old computer. -
