  1. Can anybody help.My son wanted the internet in his bedroom for xmas, so i went to the local shop and told him what i wanted to do.He told me that all i needed was a wireless broadband router and a wireless lan adapter card.Im now having trouble installing them.
Installed the router downstairs to my pc and connected it to my cable modem and pc like in the instructions. Then fitted the wireless card to the pc upstairs.
Now i cant get an internet connection at all.I followed all the instructions carefully and know that the pc upstairs is picking up a signal because it says its weak or low in an icon. But nether pc will connect to the web.
One of the instructions was to ping in ms dos to test connections and no packets were lost, so this should mean im connected?.
But im not sure where to start now.
    Please help.
ps We are both on Xp

First, what's the brand and model of your router?

If you haven't done this, In your computer, go to control panel>Network connections>Local Area Connection. Right click on that and click on Status.

It should say connected and the speed, probably 100Mb. Then click on Support. Should say 'Address Type= Assigned by DHCP, Then your Assigned address such a 192.168.0.112, then subnet mask 255.255...., and you default gateway such as 192.168.0.1.

If you don't see this or the equivalent, hit the 'Repair' box to the bottom.

    Reboot and check it again.

The problem may be the computer is probably looking for cable modem address and it should be looking for the new router address. Give this a try and get back to us with your router model and brand if no luck and we can try again. PS, there is a lot of troubleshooting help in XP itself. Just go to 'Help' and look around.

  3. Hi Maureen,

It sounds like you have a connection between your pc and wireless router but to confirm this, enter IP address 192.168.2.1 (from either a network connected or wirelessly connected pc) in your internet browser. You should get a router setup screen. If you don't then check your manual to confirm the setup screen IP address. If you can't confirm the connection then post again and we'll investigate further.
If you have a confirmed connection to your wireless router then it's a problem with your internet connection or router settings.
If your ISP is NTL then I can probably help you. You may need to change some settings to get your router to work and you'll definitely need to turn your cable modem, or set top box, on and off after connecting the router.
If your ISP is not NTL then you may need to contact them to confirm what router settings you need to change. This could include WAN MAC address, certain ISP settings for your router or a userid and password.

    Regards,
    Lee.
