  1. any tips?

Default seems to be 192 kbits/sec for TMPGENC plus 2.5

Also, im just a young padowan in the Conversion/DVD authoring arena, so i dont yet have a vast knowledge of how things work, while keeping that i mind i ask this:

It seems that i can make DVD audo in the following:

    CBR Linear PCM
    CBR Mpeg 1 layer 2

    VBR Linear PCM
    VBR Mpeg 1 layer 2

Are they all "dvd compatible", and by that i mean would they play universally on all dvd players? If not, then which one is?

Also, what would be the best bitrate-to-type combination that will give me the most quality for the least amount of space...

    for example, VBR Mpeg 1 layer 2 at 128 kbits/s ???

It depends on the source. If your source is 224kbps AC3, then using 1536kbps PCM isn't going to improve the audio. Also, "sounding like crap" is a subjective measure - it depends on what sort of audio set-up you have (5 speaker, 1 subbie surround sound will sound a lot different to a pair of dodgy PC speakers).

VCD is 224kbps, so because I only use the inbuilt TV speakers, I make everything 224kbps and that's good enough for my TV/VHS caps or downloaded stuff.

That VBR and CBR is referring to the video - for DVD, you can't use VBR audio. Linear PCM takes up massive amounts of room, and MPEG 1 Layer 2 audio is not part of the DVD spec for NTSC on its own. IMO you'd be better off just converting the video with TMPGEnc, then using either ffmpeggui or besweet to convert your audio to an AC3 audio file, which is dvd-compliant for both PAL and NTSC. See What is DVD for the DVD specs.
    If in doubt, Google it.
