Don't know where they're going to be on sale again, but I picked up a 400GB Seagate at CUSA for $250 including tax (before a $30MIR), which probably isn't much more than the 300GB Maxtor. The Seagate also comes with a 5 year warranty. The Maxtor on the other hand only comes with 1 year if it's retail, or 3 years if it's OEM. I generally shop for the best price per MB, but I'm also getting to a point where I've got a lot of data I really don't want to have to create / retrieve again. And let's face it, bigger is better. :P Actually I already have quite a few drives in the 200-250 range, so I was looking for a big jump in case I end up replacing something else.

  3. awe i saw only one 400gb seagate there and it 299 and it was the ATA 100 and not the SATA150.

oh well.... I'll probably end up getting 250 - 300gb sata maxtor now, because it has the 16mb buffer...and another a year down the road

  4. Is an external FIREWIRE 800 drive better than an internal SATA Drive?

Well, if you think about what is in an external HDD (USB 2.0 or Firewire) you'd probably answer your own question. HDDs are never usually starved for bandwidth with a decent connection (i.e. no USB 1.1), so it is the max speed of your HDD that is the delimiter, not how you connect it to your system. Short answer, no.

  6. okay cool.

Lucky thing I bought today a 250 gb maxtor sata -- for 172 at CompUSA in Atlanta, GA.

Now I just got to figure out how to put it in, correctly.

    Thanks everyone...

If you haven't already opened it (or you can get them to price match), Staples will have the ATA133 250GB 8MB cache on sale starting Sunday for $130, shipped free.

  8. Anyone know where I can find an inexpensive version of Windows XP Home Edition?

    Anyone heard of http://www.itechwholesale.com/pd_microsoft_windows_xp.cfm

Are they legit? Seems like a good price-- but I've heard rummors of scams selling stolen keys and activations and stuff and I don't want to pay for osmething that won't work.

    suggestions?

For what it's worth, the site appears ...appears to be legit because they list a street address. It's highly unlikely that a warez distributor would list their street address

that site says it uses 128 bit encryption but i didn't see no little padlock on their order page...so i would be cautious about ordering from them.....compuplus.com has operating systems reasonably priced and all you have to do is buy a mouse pad to get a OEM of XP.

  11. I thought about checking out compuplus.com and I did --- it looks legit, has the BBB seal on it and everything.... so I thought I'd click on it and check that there weren't any complaints on them.

I couldn't find them in the BBB listing - this is the reply I got from the Better Business Buerue:

Thank you for your message to BBBOnLine. After a review of the said site and seal, it does appear that this company is indeed misrepresenting themselves as participants in BBBOnLine. We consider such displays a trademark violation and will actively pursue these issues. Thank you for notifying us about this particular company. You are a valuable part of keeping the BBBOnLine Seal virile. This email will be forwarded to our trademark legal specialist to investigate.
