  1. Can anyone tell me what is the difference between CD and DVD Jewel cases ? By DVD Jewel case I am not refering to the regular DVD cases commerical movies come in.

Also it has been mentioned in a few threads that the centre hub of a DVD differs from a CD. Can someone please explain how they are different ?
    I've compared a few of my DVD-R/+R to CD-Rs and I can't see a difference. Maybe it's my 50 year old eyes

I'm not sure but I don't think there is much difference between the DVD and CD Jewel cases, at least from what I can see on the ones I'm looking at. I have heard that dvds "require" a different type of one because of the way they are made. CDs have a clear plasic layer on the bottom, the laser goes through that to the data layer where it reads the data, and above that there is the label. So CDs are actually more vunerable from the top. DVDs on the other hand have a clear plasic layer on either side of the data layer, making them more safe. Because of this DVDs need to be stored differently than CDs so the 2 plastic layers don't come apart.

CDs and DVDs have the same form factor, so either case will store either equally well

That's what I was thinking. I had read that you need special cases for DVDs but I was looking at a DVD Jewel Case and a CD one and they looked exactly the same! Probably just a marketing thing to get people to buy "special" jewel cases for DVDs.

    Yeah, probably

If they were different the DVD players wouldn't be able to play CDs. I've been using cheap slim 5.2mm CD cases for my single movie DVDs, and the CD multiple cases for the multi ones. The only thing that I would worry about is those ultra-slim cases. I've heard that the disc actually touches the case .....not good :P

  6. The reason I asked is, I read a few comments here against storing DVD in CD Jewel cases. It said the CD and DVD hub centres were different. But looking at each a DVD-R, a CD-R and a DVD Jewel case and a CD Jewel case I can't see any visible differences ?

  7. I don't think there is any physical reason you can't store DVDs in a jewel case. The form factors are identical. About the only thing that differentiates DVD cases is that (some of them) support the edge of the disk as well as the center, but if you're storing things vertically that additional support doesn't really apply.

For myself, I don't like jewel cases because they have transparent parts. My gut tells me DVDR is more susceptible to UV than CDR (and CDR is already pretty susceptible). I prefer opaque black DVD cases because they keep out all light, but if your storage location has no chance of exposure to direct sunlight you're probably safe either way.

You don't need edge support because the DVD/CD doesn't bow under its own weight. Ideally, nothing should touch the disc except the very center spindle, and it grips the inside surface of the hole

The common plastics used for jewel cases actually attenuate almost all UV. The champion UV attenuator is cyanoacrylates (plexiglas, Lucite), but all do a pretty good job.

Your car safety glass also attenuates a lot of UV, but not all. As do most glass types

    Hello,

None that I know of. They both hold a disc

Now that I have some spindles of DVD-Rs, I need an efficient way of storing them that will also protect them. I read through a few different threads (1, 2, 3 and clam shells) to see what those of you who've been at this for awhile are using.

I've looked at different brands of slim CD cases, and am I right that the hubs all appear to be the same ? : a hub with three plastic prongs to grip the inside of the CD and a ring around this hub to, I guess, give a little more support to the center of the disc.
So this is enough support for the disc ?

The only other thing that I've noticed is that, with some of the slim CD cases, every part of the case is translucent.
Target carries the brand "Fellowes", and their slim case is slightly different. It's more like a traditional CD case where the front part of the case is clear and the back part is a non-see-through black plastic.

If I went with some of the slim CD cases that have a translucent/transparent front and back, is there a potential for enough light coming in through the back part of the case to damage the dye-side of the recorded DVD ?

In link#2 in the first paragraph, lordsmurf said: "Slim cases can rub the discs and ruin them. It's a gamble. I tend to stay with normal double cases. The discs are safest in these."
Was he talking about slim DVD cases and not slim CD cases ?

    Thank you in advance
