Using the official fw that was new about 5 months ago or so. If anything, I think the MCC media off the BTC's are slightly better than MCC's off the Pioneer. The original stock firmware was horrible.

  3. Well the Pioneer I ordered finally arrived today and so far 6 out of 6 have written and verified.

Actually I guess that is not quite true as I did try one assuming the drive had the latest firmware and although it wrote fine it did not verify. I downloaded and installed the latest firmware as I did with the HP and the BenQ, and since then am 6 for 6 written and verified, and these are the same disks I tested the HP and BenQ on.

So far am very pleased with the drive.

your 6 out of 6 really doesn't mean much....you fail to realize there is NO ONE DVD BURNER that will write to every brand of DVD MEDIA.....I have a PIONEER 107 drive that doesn't like PRINCO media which is the crappiest media of them all but my PLEXTOR 708A drive burns them flawlessly.....so in summary your own test between a BENQ 1620 and a PIONEER 108 in my opinion doesn't mean much.....to me anyway.....

  5. To anyone interested, Newegg has a rebadged BenQ 1620 (NU Technology DDW-163BLK) for $62, up $7 from a week ago, and only good through tomorrow. Mine should arrive by the end of the week.

From what I can gather from cdfreaks, the NU Tech G7P9 firmware will run the BenQ utilities, so no need to void the warranty by cross-flashing.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

Hi guys. I think I got a re-badged BenQ; it says "ATAPI DVD DD 2X16X4X16G7H9."

How do I update the firmware now? Tthe official BenQ one from their site doesn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    MJ

  8. Go to www.nu-global.com Get the G7P9 firmware for the DDW-163. My Nu-Tech DDW-163 (rebadged BenQ 1620a) shows up the same as yours and had the same firmware code.

So cross-flashing didn't work? Oh, get the bitsetting utility and QScan from the BenQ website. The G7P9 firmware will let you run them.

    Good luck.

if you have a rebadged 1620 then go to the BENQ FORUM at cdfreaks.com........you will see a thread for the UNOFFICIAL BENQ firmware site....there you will find the webpage where you can download the windows exe flasher and the B7P9 cvt. file......the website is called UNOFFICIAL BENQ something like that....sorry i am at work so i don't have the link for it.......just download the windows flasher exe and the cvt. file then boot your pc in safe mode.....make sure you shutdown any programs running in the background like antivirus......double click on the windows flasher and direct it to where you put that cvt. file then let the flasher do its thing....then reboot the pc when the flashing is successfully done........

I got the I/O Magic rebadged in Dec and it had the Benq firmware (B7H9) on it. All I needed to to was flash with the official Benq release, no special tricks.

that's because your rebadged I/O MAGIC drive came with the B firmware.....Ma_Jie has G firmware which would need to be crossed flashed for the official BENQ FIRMWARE which is the B series......

I know, I got lucky! Here is a link to the Unofficial Benq Firmware Page that should have everything to crossflash to the latest firmware, B7T9.
