  1. Hi,
Been lurking for a while and after much research, i got a new Canopus ADVC-50 for Christmas. Arrived today. All set to start carputuring my old VHS. I installed it in a spare drive bay. Connected the power and ran the supplied cable from the internal jack on the ADVC-50 to my Firewire port on the back of my computer. I turned on my machine and the ADVC-50 started smoking right near the internal firewire jack. It actually glowed red before I could unplug the cable. I'm assuming the card is trash now and plan to return it next week for another. I'm curious as to wether I did something wrong or was it a defective card. I can attach the cable now and there is no problem. Of course, the system doesn't recognize it either. My system firewire port is fine as it can see my ipod. Per the Canopus directions, I should be able to use either the front or internal firewire port of the ADVC and am supposed to connect it to a capture card. I assume the system firewire is what they mean. Any help in what might have gone wrong would be appreciated. I'll have to wait until next week to start capturing I guess.

    Merry Christmas.

  3. I'm glad I didn't either. Computer seems fine. Before I get the new card put in does anybody have any idea what in the Firewire could have caused this to burn up like that? I mean this was a true " Firewire". Has anyone seen this before?

  4. I have an ADVC-50 installed into a CD-Rom bay, but I have always used the front firewire socket for my connection. This has not caused any difficulty.

The only clue that I have with your situation is that in the UK, I have not been able to find any six pin to six pin firewire cables (but I have not been looking that hard as the front port is fine). The only ones that I have been able to find are the four to six, which made me think at the time that the internal firewire socket in the ADVC was a a bit odd.

It is more likely a faulty card; some kind of short circuit.

These are really good cards, so I hope that you get a new one.
