capture and convert avi to mpeg1, or capture mpeg1 directly

With my Matrox card I can capture to AVI using their capture program and then convert to
mpeg1 for vcd. takes a bit of time

or I can

capture to mpeg 1 directly using Cyberlink PowerVCR.

I cannot see too much difference.

Have any of you experts out there got any technical reasons one way is better or not?
