  1. I believe the Ilo will ignore any incoming MV signals from telling it to NOT RECORD that source. So, m the recorded dvd would have the MV signal present as well I assume.

  2. Part of what I'm thinking is that I can either get one of those video stabilizer things, or for about the same price get the ILO recorder and use the hacked firmware....

    Ah, I see now.
I believe it was only on the incoming signal.

The LiteOn hacks (and the ILO is based off the same principle) were for turning off incoming MV detection.

I saw list in a previous post of someone asking if the 3HRS works with the DVDRHD04. I am currently on 1191. Has a hack for the Hard Drive verion been posted?

Is there a roll-back option for iLo firmware?

Thanks for any information you can provide.

There is no hack for the HD04 yet, using the liteon 5045 firmwares may be the only hope to do so. You can go back to the 1185 firmware and Guitarman has a site with that firmware.

Thanks for the information. My DVRHD04 - 1191 has a new issue where the player pauses/freezes between chapter marks. It makes watching movies a bit frustrating.

Is there a patch or firmware fix for this issue? Have other users run into to this with Firm 1191?

I don't think I've heard of that one. The big issue with the 1191 is the player freezing on Hello when using the timer for recording.

There is indepth info on the HD04 at this site, you should find what your looking for there.

  9. Darn it, I must ask a newbie question about firmware.

I have ILO non hard drive version out of the box from Walmart
1, . How do I check firmware on unit?
    2. Which hacked firmware would I need to use: 1095 or 1097
    3. The firmware for the 1095 ends with .ESO and the 1097 ends with E2O. What's the difference in the extensions?
    4. Finally, do I drop the file on a cd-r as a data file and then just press play in the ILO? And what would I see on the TV screen when I do this?

    Thanks so much

Update: after further research, I found this at the techolio forum:

"If it is right out of the box it is most likely 1086. You can tell by selecting setup on the remote. When in setup menu you will see # at top of the menu in this format SNxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx(xxx-xxxx) the 3rd set of 4 will be the firmware version 0086 will be 1086 0095 will be 1095 and so on. With you wanting both 3 hr and macrovision removed I say use 1097 from Guitarmans site. It seems they are same for system but 1097 is for both system and drive 1095 is system only. Most of the time drive firmware updates are for more media compatability. Oh and burn it as iso9660 and make sure to finalize the disk burned.

It will be the same name for hacked or not. So if you got the one that say hacked it is the one. Yes nero will burn iso9660. If you open nero there will be a compilation window or whatever they call it. Just click on cd-rom(iso) and then drag that file into the new window and it will be iso9660 when you burn it. I am and most of us are useing that version. I know it works on vhs tapes. I have tested a good bit that I know are macrovision protected and no problems. For backing up your dvd collection I would recomend you use the computer if you got a dvd burner in it."

Please make any additions if this is incorrect. But it appears if the ILO is straight out of the box I can use both firmwares. The latest 1097 would probably be ideal. All I do is open up Nero and select CDrom ISO, click New and drag the file to the window from my file window (for some reason it doesn't show up when I click the open tab on Nero). Make sure I'm not doing a mulit-session cd and make sure to finalize the cd. That's it, right? and then insert it into the player.

  10. I'm going to do this for my sister, but must ask... What's so great about
3 hour mode? I own a panny E100 and have flexible recording mode, which utilizes the disc effeciently.

I think flex. recording mode is not available on ILO. Anything past 2 hours on the panny looks like crap, so why would anyone want 3 hour mode if it's not going to look that great??

  11. The ilo actaully looks pretty good in 4 hour mode. Before the 3 hr mode became available I archived an HD recording off TNT-HD on my DVR to the dvd recorder in 4 hour mode (DVR ddownconvertered to 480i). It came out rpetty good.

That is because the Panasonic has a really crappy encoder chipset. Even 2-hour mode on a Panasonic is often unacceptable.

It all comes down to the file specs. PQ (picture quality) is a delicate balance between source quality, resolution, bitrate and encoder quality (hardware or software). Panasonic sucks at the last one.

3-hour mode is an optimal time frame. It saturates 352x480 with a high bitrate (4.0 max avg in most cases) and results in good PQ.

A good encoder chip (for example: LSI in a LiteOn or JVC, not quite sure what ILO has in it) can also reduce noise and clean the image. Again, something Panasonic cannot do.

Do not dismiss other recorders because of your experience with a known crappy PQ unit. Panasonic has a thing about adding mini-macroblocks, and almost always ruins VHS transfers, enhancing the VHS noise rather than filtering it out. It's hard to see at 2-hour mode, especially on a super-small tv, but it's there. It's blatantly obvious at longer times or larger tv's (26"+).

  13. Yes the Macrovision hack works very good with the ilo DVDR04's S-Video input, but when I tried to use it with my DV Panasonic camcorder for analog, to digital, conversion using a firewire cable between the ilo, and the camcorder no luck. It would shutdown the recording when trying a VHS Macrovision encoded tape=Camcorder=ilo recorder A\D conversion. Still I can't complain, and would like to thank the responsible people that hacked the firmware, and hosted it!

  14. The MV hack works great. Recored VHS into the ilo no problem.
