    In principle - no.
The general method is to frameserve from VirtualDub to an mpeg encoder like TMPGEnc or Mainconcept or CCE or...

There are 2 codecs that can do it. YMPEG & FFVFW. You have to save a dummy .avi file and configure the codec to output to mpeg.

...but still, in principle, no. If you have an encoder, it's dead easy to just frameserve.

  5. Tkx very much mats and burnman

So what am i doing wrong?

I open the .mpg on virtualdubmod.
    Then go file->start frameserve
Then i save the frameserver file.

I open tmpgenc xpress, and i set as input the frameserver file. It recognize it just fine.

But when i click on ENCODE on tmpgenc, it say "file type not suported" or something like that.

Does anyone know what am i doing wrong?

No. But look under Guides for common TMPGenc probs, and also the fraeserving guide for VirtualDub.

simps, have you just tried opening the file in tmpgenc? I get the same frameserving error in tmpgenc 2.5 but can open the file directly with it. Also, have you tried the codecs? YMPEG is $25 but is trialware and works for free for 30 days or so. FFVFW is free, but i haven't compared the quality of the 2 to see if it is as good.
You may also want to try AVIDemux, a fine free mpeg2 encoder, or quenc another great encoder if you like frameserving with AVISynth.

    Hope this helps.

  8. Tkx a lot again mats and burnman

I can open the .mpg directly on tmpgenc, that work fine. But as i said, i need to put subtitles on the video, and the subs are not showing up on tmpgenc preview.
Im using ffdshow for subs, maybe there is some config in ffdshow that i didnt make properly.

I will try ympeg right now, i will post results

simps there is a bug with ffdshow that keeps it from showing up in vdub. To get around it. you will have to install it in a directory with no spaces like C:\ffdshow not C:\Program Files\ffdshow. This should solve your problem You will still have to mux the video to the audio but it should work.

    @ simps,

There is also the MPEG-2 Codec by Matrox, that you can use in vdub or
any other frameserver app. In the given video editor app, you would
simply select the Video\Compressor.. and select Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame
and then, File\Save AVI.. and give a filename.

It will be an MPEG-2 but wrapped inside an AVI container. You could try and
mux around with it w/ some off-side tools/utils into an actual MPEG-2 but
thats a whole lot of work, and wouldn't be worth it for you.

Still, there *ARE* applications for this route. You just have to see what they
    are first.

The quality from this (Captured AVI to MPEG-2 wrapper) is excellect, if you
    use highest bitrate.

I frame only though? You would have to be looking at some pretty heavy filesizes.

  12. I couldnt make it with ympeg

The only reason i need to output .mpg (mpeg2) with virtualdubmod, is because i happen to have some SVCD movies (.bin) that i need to put portuguese subtitles on it.

So what i am doing is this:

    I extract .mpg from .bin/cue
Then i open virtualdubmod, and open the .mpg, and load subtitle filter
Then i encode it to .avi, using divx on 1280x720 res with 30fps and 8000bitrate.

Then i open the .avi in tmpgenc xpress 3, and encode it to svcd again.

So i am encoding 2 times the video, and that is not good, im sure i am loosing quality by doing that.

But thats the only way i can make put subtitles on my .mpg files.

If i try to open the .mpg file direct in tmpgenc, it will load just fine.
But the subtitles wont load on the preview, and i have even tryed to encode a few minutes to see if the subtitles would be there in the output .mpg, but they werent.

I feel that it is possible, to open the .mpg directly into tmpgenc xpress 3, and make it show the subtitles too. I have already made "directshow multimedia file reader" priority to max in VFAPI priority order in tmpgenc xpress 3.

I have ffdshow installed for subtitles, and it works great with virtualdubmod.
But it wont work with tmpgenc xpress 3.

Then i installed vobsub, and now, some times some subtitles load in tmpgenc xpress 3. but they are completly out of sync.

But since sometimes (dunno why isnt this all the time) i can see the subtitles in tmpgenc xpress 3 preview with directshow from vobsub, i thunk it is possible to only encode the .mpg once, and have the final .mpg with the permanent subtitles.

So, this is my problem. When i need to put subtitles on .mpg, i am making .mpg to .avi, and then .avi to .mpg again. I encode it 2 times.

So, does anyone know, how to put subtitles on a .mpg with a better way?

    Tkx ppl

Simps i'd go with AVIDemux. It converts avi to mpg2 and has a subtitle filter. I can't tell you how to use it because i don't know. But i know it has it.
    Hope this helps

I couldn't get AVIdemux to open my mpeg2 file nor the accompanying smi file. Virtualdub can with Vobsub.

  15. But thats the only way i can make put subtitles on my .mpg files.
If you DVD player support selectable subtitles for SVCD you can try it - there are samples around with SVCD and CVD style selectable subtitles that you can download and burn to try in the player. Thus no need to re-convert the video.

    You need to get avidemux2.

  16. Encoding twice is bad, particularly using a hi-compression codec like Divx.

The ideal solution would be to open the MPG in Vdub, add subtitles, and frameserve the result. Have you tried more than one encoder? Tried the frameserve with no subtitles, to pinpoint the problem? Possible try a different source MPG?

Frameserving is designed to solve exactly this problem. This should work. Check the file output settings, compression, framesize, FPS, etc.

The other option would be to save an intermediate AVI, preferably uncompressed or using Huffy or something similar. This would be a VERY large file.

I think trying to get TMPGenc to read the subtitle file will be more problematic than getting the frameserving to work.

Abond, I did try it with avidemux2. I have the latest STABLE version 2.0.42

I already framserve to TMPGenc with Virtualdub and VOBsub (Textsub). I was looking for an all in one solution. Avidemux sounded like what I needed. Oh well.
