  1. I am trying to follow a guide on using virtualdubmod to output in MPEG2 format. I get up to this point in the guide, and under Video/Compression he has ffdshow video codec listed (see this pic).

I've tried installing ffdshow filters and codecs and it either causes virtualdub to crash or ffdshow doesn't appear in this list. How can I make it appear?

Thanks and sorry for the newbieness

YMPEG can enable MPEG out output from virtualdub or its variants - looks like ffdshow can too.
    If in doubt, Google it.

The lastest build of ffdshow listed on sourceforge has a problem with the installer. Basically it is supposed to use the short path variable for the VIDC entry, but it uses the full path instead.

To fix it you need to go into your registry and change the entry from program files to progra~1.

Could also try a newer build as they make use of a VFW wrapper that goes in your system dir, so no more path problems. I was thinking of doing a new compile maybe today as theora and a few other things have been updated.

  9. You could try avidemux, its basically a vdub clone but supports mpeg2 output via the lavcodec. Its native for linux but has been ported to windows.

Actually there are quite a few posts on VDub, ffmpeg and MPEG2 encoding with VDub in general.

kieron, you will have to install ffdshow in a directory that has no spaces/only 1 name for instance C:\FFDSHOW. it is a bug in the installer. If you install it to C:\Program Files\FFDSHOW it will NOT work. You STILL will have to mux your audio & Video if you are creating a .mpg though.

    Happy Holidays!

It will work if you go into your registry and manually change the path as I already covered.

Anyway last build I did was 2004-12-23 and can be found here: http://celticdruid.no-ip.com/xvid/ffdshow/
