Couldn't find the "Who the **** are these people anyway?" option so I just went with "no".

    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. No. Never heard of em, but a quick google threw up some connection with designing.

Which brings me to my point: Fashion Designers
    WHO buys this shit?
You see this crap on models on some runway. People and reporters flock to see this crap and take pictures of this crap. And I'm SURE that some people even SOOO look forward to the next "So N So Fashion Show" like most of our children look forward to Santa leaving gifts for them.
I just saw a whole two hour special advertised on CNN about the history of fashion....WHAT?
I don't get it....never did. Andy Warhol COPIES Cambell Soup cans and people faces...makes them different colors....and he is an artist?
These people are artists? (self proclaimed of course)...

Back in high school I was obsessed with Marithe & Francois Girbaud. Whatever happened to that fashion faux pas?

Anyone remember "Lard-Ash" jeans? The parody to Jordache Jeans ...for fat women. They had a little pig over the back pocket. Now that was designing

    (emphasis mine)

who else will proclaim you an artist? what is the criteria?

if I go to art school and get an art degree, does that make me an artist? if I paint with no pedigree, does that make me not an artist? is it a gallery show? a critical write up? selling a piece of work?

what's the difference between painting a Campbell soup can, and painting a tree in my yard? I'm not creating the image out of thin air, I'm making a representative image of a physical object.

if you don't like the art, that doesn't make it not art... it just makes you an art critic.

HUGE difference from the likes of Van Gogh and others.
So how have any of the people on the list....and Warhol changed your life Housepig?

  16. Not really directly affected...no

Never heard those names mentioned before but I'm not big on fashion.
If you listed Calvin Klein, maybe...not that I look for any designer name, but some just become common in stuff you see around you or wear or buy.

Levis are like the only jeans I'll wear nowadays.

If we didn't have fashion designers or fashion shows, we wouldn't have the supermodels to drool over

There would be a few threads missing in OT
But life would go on, I'm sure.

If it wasn't for Warhol, we might not have Photoshop today - or at least, Photoshop as the way we know it.
Very specific plugins and filters would not exist - though someone else would've thought up the idea somewhere and they'd get the credit instead.

Warhol just introduced a new way of making art.

It extends to certain filmmaking styles and even music videos - he created the very first music videos combining visual art with music.

He also launched the careers of Nico and The Velvet Underground.

Blondie, Simple Minds along with a number of other bands were very influenced by Warhol.

Warhol had a wicked sense of humor - and could help turn very boring things into something entertaining. Doing parodies of everything from celebrities to Brillo pads.

It's not that he did anything that someone else couldn't do - he just did it first.

I'm with you hech54. Warhol was a hack. We might not have Photoshop today? How so? There may not be those specific plugins and filters but I could give a rat's ass.

The music videos I've seen that I like do not have any hint of Warhol influence. Nico and The Velvet Underground? Blondie?

It may be art but so is the work of that painter that stuffs paint up their ass and shits on the canvas.

to answer your question, I've never heard of any of the people on your list, and Warhol hasn't significantly affected my life one whit. but neither is germaine to my point, and it's an ad hominem attack.

again - what's your criteria? so far, you've just proved that you're a critic, with relatively orthodox taste. nothing wrong with that, but "I don't like it, so it's not art" isn't much of an argument.

    @conquest:

if it takes stuffing paint up the ass to make the technique you're looking for, what's your problem with it... as long as it's not your ass?

again - not liking the art doesn't make it not art, it just makes you a critic.

All I'm saying is that his work is hardly worth all the hype he's been getting.

fair enough - I think a lot of artists' hype outstrips their worth and relevance.
and correct, you did not say it wasn't art, I shouldn't have inferred you did.

(also, I misread your original post - I didn't realize you were speaking about a particular artist. I'm not familiar with anyone who uses that technique, except for a skanky pron actress named Mila.)
