I was wondering if there was a way to improve the quality of the output of my DVD. I convert an avi file to DVD amd the picture is not that clear and the are squares everywhere. Is there any way I could fix this before I put it on dvd.

Depends how good the source was. Try one of the HD Movie Trailers on DivX.COM as your source file and see how good the resulting MPEG2 file ends up looking.
There's a VirtualDub Filter that works fairly well for reducing blockiness.

You would have to then FrameServe into your MPEG encoder from VirtualDub. -
Did you use a bitrate calculator to adjust the bitrate for the length of the video? The blockiness may be from too low a bitrate, especially noticeable in dark and high action scenes.
It also helps to describe the software and steps you used.
