I started by going down to my library. Of course, there was no Internet then. Anyway, to begin with, you may want to look into start programming with Basic. It is easy to understand, and with powerful assemblers out today, it can get most simple jobs done. Do searches on the 'Net Basic Programming for beginners and bone up with the articles. As you progress, look into C++ and assembly language.

HELLO WORLD!
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
First, move to India. By the time you learn how to program, that's where the last of the jobs will be.
Never mind.
Before I get reported or flamed, I mean no disrespect to the people of India. While they may receive some benefit from it, they are no the greedy corporate bastards send the jobs there. -
Agreed. It is looking like getting a job in the IT industry here in the US is going to be next to impossible within the next few years. 4 years of college down the drain I guess

Try a site like www.w3schools.com , or www.asp101.com . Both have plenty of examples, tutorials and free samples so you can have a bit of a play and see what you can do.
If in doubt, Google it. -
I looked at programming but decided against it. I also looked at it back in '88 when I was a teenager. I wish I could go back and slap myself with a big wet fish as I gave up after a while as going out having fun drinking and chasing women was more fun then, I still do that nowbut I'm a little older
I think it's going to be the same everywhere. A lot of companies are going overseas as locally most of the work is going to eastern european countries with cheap labour rates as well as places like India.
The place I worked for shut down a machine within a department and got rid of 97 jobs (I was oneand boy was I pleased) as they could subcontract the work abroad cheaper saving a few million, even including importing it!
p.s. @jimmalenko, is there a thread you haven't posted in yet? -

I also was thinking of starting looking into programming, but haven't yet. I have installed Slackware Linux, which I have been working with and installing a bunch of things from source and CVS. This has been kind of nice because I can get familiar with how programs are actually compiled and what they are made up of. Just an idea... good luck!
