Hi, hopefully I won't get flamed too badly for asking newb questions. I did search the guides, but there are just waaaay too many of them, and it's a bit confusing.
Basically, here's what I want to achieve ... I would like to backup DVD's stripping out everything except the movie and menu system (scene selections must stay). I'd keep the best sound track (DD51, or DTS).
I would like to be rid of anything PC related (Interactual, etc), all previews can go, and so on. Compression ratio matters a lot, as I now have a 51" HDTV, and bad rips tend to show artifacts.
What tools would you recommend? thanks in advance.

Have a look at VobBlanker and TitlesetBlanker. You can turn unwanted stuff into (almost) empty files without disturbing the menu structure. Good luck.

For the best quality encoding is better than transcoding. Dvdshrink is a transcoder (and a very good one I might add) that I use alot. Very fast and provides good quality backups on my 27 inch tv. Dvdrebuilder is an backup software which uses cce (cinemacraft encoder)...takes longer but should provide very good results. There are several different tools you could use listed in the tools section under dvd to dvdr. Test a few and see what works best for you.

Use DVD Shrink in re-author mode with 'no compression' set. This will strip to movie down to the bare essentials. If it doesn't fit onto a single sided disk, run it through DVD Rebuilder to get the best possible compromise between size and quality. If you want the best quality you can get, only back up to dual layer disks - then there is no compromise.

I'd go with what fritzi93 mentions if you are just wanting to keep menu's and movie
you should be able to blank most of the stuff you don't need with ease
@gunslinger, I take it you missed the bit about him wanting the menu stuff?, as DVDShrink reauthor doesn't allow this -

But ... sometimes yep ... I will use DVD Shrink.
CloneDVD 2 ... It will keep the Menu and the Main Movie ... nicely but no choice in compression ... unless I missed a hidden feature I'm not aware of. -
Thanks to all for the info and links. vobblanker looks like the kind of thing I'm looking for. I have Shrink and Decrypter already.
In CloneDVD 2, does choosing "main movie only" keep the menus by default? -
you would just untick all the titles you don't want, keeping only the main movie using the Clone DVD option (full disc) making sure the preserve menus option is ticked

It's at the beginning of your choices at top right corner.
Doesn't really have a ... main movie only ... you choose what titles you want by viewing them and put a tick mark in the titles you want to keep and same goes for audio and subtitles. -
I'd use this guide, which uses DVDDecrypter, VOBBlanker and then DVDShrink (all free).
If in doubt, Google it. -
