Burning fails with my writer and has destroyed 5 discs

I am trying to burn a movie with 4,278,230KB and as a result I have lost 4 rewritables with this new dual layer 16x writer. It starts to burn and then it fails afte about 80% I was just wondering could that be the root of my problem will I have to DVD shrink it. The error message has also been Medium error.

Sometimes I use my dvd recorder to format the disc in DVD Video mode, should that matter at all? The discs I am using are DVD-RW/R.

I am not quite sure but perhaps it is something to do with the connections as I have a C drive 1 external drive and a D Combo+ and now an E internal driver which is the one I am having the problems with. It's either faulty or I think it's in conflict with the other drivers, something to do with one is the master and the others the slave. It has ruined yet another dvd-r after burning nearly all of it then failing right at the end. What is firmware? Software hardware? It sounds to me like software from the manufacturer. I have tried that too. with www.drv.update.com. It hasn't made a blind bit of difference. So where do we go from here. The brand is an EMPREX 16X DUAL WRITER £60 at dixons. If I can't sort it. I am taking it back. The media is smartbuy dvd-rw and datawrite DVD-R which I generally use for my dvd recordings. Datawrite is fine the other one can be a bit blurry. Anyway do let me have your feedback. I'd luv to resolve it. Thanks
