I don't think VHS players have a vertical hold.

Does this happen on all tapes ?
Does it happen when playing a tape to a TV ?

If it happens on all TVs and all tapes, I'd suggest some sort of mechanical issue with the heads on the VCR. Are these commercial tapes ? It could be macrovision, although you usually also have colour issues and image bends.

  4. tks for ur reply guns1inger. no i dont have a vertical hold on my vcr but i was thinkin its macrovision tho like you say i dont get any image bending etc.
if i stop the tape and restart it, the "split screen" moves so eventually i can get it to stop at the bottom of the screen but its not ideal and very occasionally it'll start to move again during the course of the recording process...very annoying. its a new vcr, hardly ever been used and this doesnt happen during normal playback only when i hook it up to my pc or dvdrecorder. uis there any software i can use to fix this?

If it's macrovision (and it's starting to sound like it is) you need to run the signal through a full frame timebase corrector or signal amplifier that can strip the macrovision out.

I use a TBC-1000, but this may be overkill for what you need. If you are handy with a soldering iron, you could try here

    Otherwise, this might be OK

It sounds more like a tracking issue

But it could be MV. A TBC would probably clean it up.

I thought tracking earlier on, but the issue only occurs on his capture card and dvd recorder. Tracking problems would show up on the TV as well.
