  1. I've been editing for about 18 months, and this is pretty much my first foray into the "DVD" section of this forum...hopefully someone can help me out with this.

I just put 14 music videos together (avi's) on one DVD-R, with a motion menu w/audio, that has links to each video. I assembled the project in Pinnacle Studio 8, using the default settings, and this is what I ended up with:

-DVD won't play in my DVD player (Citizen JDVD3818A)-instead, it prompts me to press "Repeat", but still won't play.

-DVD plays fine in WinDVD platinum on my computer: menu has audio, and links all work fine.

-DVD plays in Windows Media Player, but the audio in the menu doesn't work. Menu links, (prev/next, etc), all work fine.

I thought it might be a problem with the DVD player, but the DVD's are acting sketchy in WMP, too, so I'm thinking there's something I'm missing.

    Hope you can help.

Did you put straight AVIs on to the DVD-R?

Or did you get Pinnacle or something else to encode them first before putting them on?

Assuming you encoded the AVIs, did you use Pinnacle or something similar to author a DVD? You can tell it's been authored - it'll have a VIDEO_TS folder with VOBs, IFOs and BUP files in. There may be an empty AUDIO_TS folder too - this is normal.

Yeah, I put a series of AVI's into Pinnacle Studio 8, added a few transitions, and set the chapter points in the timeline. Then I used the "Make Movie" feature of Studio 8 (which encodes to mpeg-2, I assume), and waited a few hours. Out popped a potential frisbee.

And, yeah...there's VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders on the disc, so I guess that worked fine.

I'll try the disc on a few other players and see what happens.

Sounds like it's a properly authored DVD then...

I've checked your player - it says it should be OK with DVD-Rs.

    Sorry - stumped...

    Good luck.

1st step, has that brand of blank media worked on that player in the past?

Reports on that player are thin

Someone says Memorex 4xDVD-R (ProdiscS03) blanks will work.

  6. Well...tried it out on a friend's DVD player, and it worked fine. Everything works exactly as it was supposed to, so I guess I finally have a good reason to get a decent DVD player.

edDV-I've never tried playing a DVD-R in that DVD player until now. This was my first DVD authoring attempt. I'll try some other brands: the one I tried is just some no-name brand I got with the burner (just installed a couple days ago).

Now to figure out what happened with Windows Media Player...

I used Pinnacle 8 for about 6 months before I gave up on it. I use TMPGEnc DVD Author now.

However, if you want to keep using Studio I suggest you always have it 'Create Disk Content but Don't Burn'. When it's done, use a software DVD player to check the files before burning. It really doesn't take any longer to do it that way.

I like this idea. TMPGEnc DVD Author is starting to sound like the next step for me, based on the amount of good reviews it gets here. Either that, or that Ulead one (which name I can't remember offhand).

    Thanks for the suggestions!
