  1. Hi everyone,

My Sony RDR-GX300 dvd recorder doesn't recognize PC-reformatted DVD+RW discs. It only accepts +RW discs that are blank or already written by himself (in this case I can use the format tool in the Sony menus). When introducing a PC-reformatted DVD+RW disc, the Tools / Disc info menu (the one that contains the possiblity to format the disc or to quick-erase all tracks on the disc) does not let do any other action than "close window".

This is a problem for me since I use DVD+RW discs for several tasks : exchanging files between 2 PCs; recording on a stand-alone Philips dvd recorder; and recording on the Sony RDR-GX300. I currently have 40+ DVD+RW discs and only 2 (two) of them are accepted by the Sony GX300.

I didn't find any settings that I could try to change in Nero 6.3 when formatting the DVD+RW disc. Quick or full format = no change.

    Any help ? Thanks a lot !

This is a serious flaw and is a huge reason SONY's first-gen DVD recorders are trash. They see RW media as unuseable unless they are virgin. Considers it write-once media, and the RDGX7 had no manual erase feature.

  3. lordsmurf,

thanks for your answer but my Sony RDR-GX300 is on the markets since July 2004 only, it is the Sony's latest generation. I'm sure we can do something to solve this DVD+RW problem, maybe using some other way to reformat the discs on PC ?

    Thanks

None of your burning programs create a useable disc (according to the Sony)?
    Damn that sucks.

  6. DVDInfo Pro has several options to erase.
    Give it a try.

  7. tompika,

Thanks a lot ! I just tried quick-formatting with dvdinfopro and the discs now can be formatted in the sony afterwards. The quick-format process in dvdinfopro takes about twice the time for the similar operation in Nero, so I guess it performs some additional erasing that Nero thinks not necessary.

Yes, I remember NicW saying that DVDInfo PRO erases every single bit in the lead-in while Nero does not.

For what it's worth, that would not work on the RDGX7 units.

  10. I bet Nic could work around that problem as well with the assistance of a Sony owner

I probably would have kept the Sony had it not been such a pain in the butt with media.
