I've encoded avi that was captured from a digital video camera using "mpgenc encoder" to a svcd using a template from the encoder. I've burned few cd's using different burning software and no matter what I used the quality of the svcd was very poor. Picture wasn't that great and the sound differs from software to software. Overall, the quality is worse than a VHS copy. I was under the impression that the VCD and/or SVCD should be better that the VHS.
Please help me, I've tried almost everything.
Any help would be very appreciative. Thank you.

what settings are you using in tmpgenc? how high/low bitrate?

I use a template in TMPGEnc for SVCD. Under the video settings I adjust the following:
Rate Control Mode: Constant Bitrate
Bitrate: 2496 kbits/sec
Encode Mode: Interlace
Motion Search Precision: highest quality -
What are the properties of your avi, if your capping to DV, then that gets converted to avi then to VCD your quality will be poor. If there's anyway you can get the bare DV file and convert that to MPEG for your VCD you'll notive a distinct improvement in qualtiy. Also remember to turn on the "interpolate YUV data from 4:1:1 to 4:4:4" in the envirtonmental settings. Apparently this helps with DV conversion (accoridng to the program anyway).
