Just thought it would be interesting to see what VCRs folks use and what they think of it/them.

I personally use a Panasonic PV-V4820 (S-VHS) most of the time, or my JVC HR-S9900U (also S-VHS). I'm pretty satisfied with both, but always looking for something better.

Think it's the cheapest SVHS available, but still gets me better captures than my standard VHS RCA VMT-385.
My sources are pretty clean so I haven't had any issues or complaints as of yet.

I gave up on the search a long time ago, after my last purchase..
and ben satisfied with it ever since.. all $169 worth.

My holly grail is currently: JVC S-VHS HR-S3910U

I use mine mainly for TV and VHS caps. I do't use my tv tuner cards
tv because its' pure crap.. too much Noise. I capture pretty much
    everything w/ this unit.

    (
.. I bought this a few weeks before the first airing of the
.. first tv show episode, Enterprise came out. Whenever
    .. that was. I forget.

I use a JVC S-VHS model, non TBC based. Has some image inhancements and modest noise reduction. I just leave all settings to off or normal.

Outputs to a hardware TBC if I need it, but I've only had to use it once in the last 1000 times or so. Then on to a Vidicraft Detailer II, then input to my Pinnacle DC30 pro.

The DC30 has a good enough proc-amp that I don't need external color correction. If I do need color correction, AVI Utilities is more than upto the task.

I use the same and it does a good job for the price.
I got mine from B&H for around $120 a few months back.

HR-S9911U, for VCR, VERY happy with results (especially as I'm adding more hardware in between).

There into their fourth season so it was probably 2000 or so...

I just use an old stereo 2 head vcr for captures. Most of the time its just fine.

If I want to do something really special than I'll bring in my 4 head hifi magnavox I bought back in 1997 (no svhs I'm afraid ).

(If i ever get into transferring ALL of my tapes I may invest in a standalone TBC )

I have the same VCR. No compliants and quite a bit better than my conventional Sony VCR's. I use my Sony Digital8 camcorder as a pass-thru to the PC and then encode to DVD with TMPGEnc.

Well, I'll be trying a JVC HR-S9500U soon. Just got a good deal on e-bay. I'll have to see how it compares to my HR-S9900U.

I forget the model number (and yes I am too lazy to look) but I have 2 old Toshiba VHS VCR's that are 6-Head models.

As I recall there was only one VHS model above the model that I have 2 of and this step-up top-of-the-line model was the same BUT it included some type of DNR for the video. Actually they also made (very short lived) a step-up from the DNR unit that had DNR as well but was a step-up in that it added S-VHS to the mix. Wanted one bad but didn't buy it (now I wish I had).

Anyways these Toshibas are the best I have ever seen.

I should point out though that I have never seen a 7000 or 9000 series JVC S-VHS. I did have 2 Panasonic S-VHS VCR's in the past (nothing special) and not too long ago a 5000 series S-VHS JVC that lasted maybe 1 1/2 years before dying. It had worse playback from VHS tapes than the Toshiba though it looked good with S-VHS when you were recording from a high quality source. The Panasonics were good as I said but I used them alot and they both went out-of-wack fairly quickly producing tapes with bad Hi-Fi Stereo tracks. Played on another VCR you had to play with the tracking to get the Hi-Fi stereo track to "stick" and even then it would "flutter" in and out from Hi-Fi Stereo mode to Normal mono mode. Some sort of alignment problem. Even tried to get the one fixed but they couldn't figure it out blah.

I also have an old (the oldest working VCR I have) 8-Head Toshiba that is multi-system but does not do conversion. I had to take the top off of it a few months back because it ate a tape and now it doesn't work unless you push a tape in and then push it down (hence taking the top of). It also will eat tapes if you try to fast forward or rewind but it still is working and the quality is still most excellent (like the 2 USA 6-head models I have). I use it for capturing PAL VHS tapes.

All of these are Hi-Fi stereo of course. The only MONO VCR I ever had was a BETA bought back around 1984 or so (I was a youngster it was the family VCR).

I don't know what to do once the Toshiba units die off. Maybe get a 9000 series JVC I guess but I am not too excited about that.

For now though I love my Toshibas

I also have a M-784 (the six head VHS w/DNR) which is basically brand new and a used M-745. I need to do some more testing with the M-784 because the DNR does a very good job with respect to eliminating chroma noise.
