Why Ban? Pardon if it is a silly question.

Since users like Jeex and NG and King John have shown it is easy to sidestep a ban by creating another username, then why ban people to begin with?

I am not trying to start trouble.

Most users don't bother. We ban duplicate profiles when we see them (it isn't difficult - the IP tells all) but problem users can be banned from even accessing this site.

I think on DSL you log on from the same Server that has the same IP all the time.,But different IP on your computer.

The server does not matter in this situation.

If you cut off the dhcp server, noone can access anything.

As soon as your lease expired, you would get a new ip.

That's right but from a town of like 2000 people,i think you would be able to tell if the guy was baned before and just came back with a new IP.

They can ban entire IP ranges if neccesary but as pointed out above this is hardly practical.

Please note that entering a range of IP addresses results in all the addresses between the start and end being added to the banlist. Attempts will be made to minimise the number of addresses added to the database by introducing wildcards automatically where appropriate. If you really must enter a range, try to keep it small or better yet state specific addresses.

I would assume the only time this would be practical is if you were getting bombarded by spam from certain countries, servers etc. If I had trouble with a poster creating multiple accounts I would simply inform their ISP

Cap knows why I said this, and exactly what it means. Obviously the mods cannot and should not participate in any thread that discusses possible ways to circumvent the very technology that enables them to do their jobs here. Kinda like a very big conflict of interest if you know what I mean. I cannot expand any further on this for fear of being bounty-hunted by Baldrick, but trust me when I say that the IP tool is extremely hard to get around. If you've seen the results it brings back, you'll know why

So you're keeping your secret because you see yourself possibly being banned some day and want to circumvent the ban to get back.

Why not just expend that effort in not getting banned in the first place?
