  1. Plasmas use a lot of power, around 475watts, generate a lot of heat, thus they have fans & can make the room warm, which is nice in the winter, not in the summer.

A 32" LCD tv by comparsion, just 100-150 watts & 1 watt on Standby

Older plasmas had fans, new ones do not.

    Yes.
When I was looking at plasmas there seemed to be a lot of good priced ones until you noticed they wanted £130 for the speakers... £150 for a wall mount... £100 for the TV tuner card etc.
I ended up using eight 3" pieces of Unirax to wall mount it instead. Cost about £3.

  6. Just thought I'd add an update...I bought a TV.

While at Sam's my wife hassled me about the huge-mongous size of the Akai's cabinet. In fact, I wasn't sure myself if that puppy would make it into the living room without "house structural modification". There was a samsung 50" DLP next to it that she saw - she said "how 'bout THAT one?" I didn't want to spend $2500-ish, but she reminded me that we've been discussing a new TV for a few years now and if we got the Akai we'd always wonder what that DLP would look like...

I never buy on impulse, so I did more research, and compared at other stores. DLP has its faults, but no big ones for me. I don't see any "rainbows", and I do like the wider viewing angle over CRT projection. I found an online place where I could get a 61" delivered for under $2900, so I dropped the hammer. While I was at it, I got a Dayton subwoofer from Parts Express.

DAYUM. I love this rig. The sub was well worth the $125, and the TV was a great choice. Highly recommended.

One thing - the TV stands are *out of hand expensive* for what you get. They were asking over $400 for the simple particleboard stand that matches my TV. Luckily, I found one at Circuit City that matched an older 58" Samsung for $140. Works great, no TV overhang.

So. Just thought I'd tell y'all...
