is there a way to set your computer to start up at a preset time without having to physically press the on button?
thanks,

There should be an option in your CMOS setup if your PC isn't very old. It may be under Advanced Settings or possibly Power Management.

Or maybe put it into sleep/hibernate and find an app that could start it up from that? Maybe SHDN has this functionality in it somewhere?

Macs do this very well!!!
Its done it well for years and years and years.... well except for a few "Dark days"
You could see if your bios has a power on on ring/wake on ring option, hook to a modem and then call your computer awake.
