  1. Search posts could not find anything on this new software. Sells from Cyberlink for $39.95. Claims to be able to do Mpeg 1, 2, 4 H264 and divx on the fly. Requires P4 2.2 Ghz with 256mb ram and 15 GB for installation of sw to use H264. This seems to be a real decent price. Cyberlink site posts some comparions to mpeg2. At the same bitrate the H264 file is half the size and better resolution than mpeg2. Try this link:

  2. I'm giving it a whirl. So far, the quality and speed are great, and the customization and batch modules are perfect.

  3. OK, I'm tired and tomorrow is Christmas, but here's what I've found. tHE h264 encoder is VERY impressive. At it's highest setting, it is at least as nice as mpeg-2 in a typical dvd-9 to dvd-5 transcode. Perhaps rivalling a DVD-Rebuilder job, imo. At 1000 bitrate, it looks very nice on my LCD monitor, and is very compact. Just over 10mb/minute.

The significant downside is that none of my software players can play it, including Cyberlink's own PowerDVD! I know there are some out there that can, but the little player it comes with has basic VCR functionality. I read that PowerDVD will read it soon, but it'll probably be a pay-for add-on.

The quality is there and beautiful, but the standard is young and needs more developers to create players and editors to support it..

h.264 encoder if I recall right is from moonlight. Not sure about the other encoders.

  5. Moonlight has a very nice encoder. No functional batch mode, though, which kept me from buying it. Cyberlink's encoder is REALLY nice. I put LOTR Return of the King Extended Edition into a single 2.8gb file overnight and it looks every bit DVD quality.

  6. I should add that Nero Recode is capable of significantly better quality than the Moonlight encoder. Moonlight can only do 1-pass encoding and Recode does 2 very, very well, but it takes forever.

  7. After I install the MainConcept H.264 Encoder Preview, WMP and PowerDVD 6 can now play the H.264 file converted by the PowerEncoder.
I would say the quality seems to be quite good.
I used the preset Good Quality mode (average 1000Kbps) , and the encoding time is very fast (1:1).
    A 1GB VOB produces a 230MB H.264.
I am wondering if there are any other good encoder out there that can encode the audio to anything other than mp2.

You should try a recent ffdshow build for decoding. It now handles h.264 quite nicely.

Well Nero does AVC (h.264) and he/lc aac. You could also use mencoder and have mp3, aac, AC3, etc. audio or just encode your audio seperatly.

  10. I have tried ffdshow, but I still can't play the H.264 file generated by PowerEncoder after installing and even rebooting.
I used the 20050122 build and selected H.264 while installing.
    What is mencoder?
The limitation of the audio being only mp2 is a serious drawback of PowerEncoder.
Separately encoding the audio is a workaround but it is troublesome.

Well you would still need a TS splitter that can handle AVC. mencoder is a commandline encoder capable of various formats like x264, xvid and libavc codecs. It comes with mplayer.

    Hi celtic_druid,

Could you tell me what TS splitter I need in order to play AVC files generated by PowerEncoder in Media Player Classic ?
    Thanks!
