Should the monitor be switched off when not in use for long periods,e.g. 8-10 hours or it can be left on all the time? Thanks

I switch mine off, but only 'cause it lights up the whole room at night!

Thank you Bugster. Can the life- time of the computer monitor be prolonged by switching it off when not in use?

I am no expert, but it can't hurt.

Another option is to use Windows Power save settings to 'switch off' the monitor after a period of inactivity. This obviously doesn't switch the monitor off completley, but it switches off the actual screen and display circuitry, so it may help.

You could also use a screensaver.

    There is no right answer

I burned out the power switch on a monitor by constantly turning it off

Are we talking about the actual PC being on, or when the PC's off ? Mine goes into standby mode automatically when I shut down windows, I have my screens aver set to 20 minutes, and if I'm leaving the computer on overnight I always turn it off.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'll usually shit mine off when I know I'll be gone for several hours. Mine do power save, but occasionally something may happen that causes them to wake up, and if I'm sleeping the clicking and the sudden brightness might wake me up. Not sure why I turn them off when I leave. I guess it's just a force of habit, but if your monitor has a power save mode and you use a screensaver you should be fine.

(Amazing what they do with LEDs these days. :P
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.

no problem. Thanks for the clarification

As I and a couple of others have said, generally a screensaver or just physically pushing the power button on it to turn it off will be fine, and will alleviate any possible problems you might encounter from leaving it on. Not a requirement, but advisable IMO.
    If in doubt, Google it.
