    Hello All!

I am a newbie to this forum, but I've been using ffmpegx for about
4 months, succesfully encoding stuff for DVDs.

Recently I got a 16x9 HDTV, and all of my previous DVDs made with
ffmpegx generated content show up in "postage stamp" format, where
the black bars are both on top and on the sides. Therefore I'd like to
encode the material to full 16x9 size, which is 852x480. I'm using 16x9
Divx/Xvid source material. My attempts at new DVDs either continue to
letterbox the content, creating the "postage stamp" effect, or the image
has full vertical resolution, but compressed Horizontal lines, and black
bars on the sides. I've tried explicitly setting the image size to 852x480,
and I get errors in the encoding process and it never complete.

What am I doing wrong here? Any and all advice would be most
    appreciated.

    Cheers,

    -STS

  2. DVD has always the same size, and you must not use another (like 852x480). To get the 16:9 effect you should enable the 16:9 mpeg-2 flag by setting autosize to "DVD 16:9".

    Thank you Major!

The problem was Toast. I wasn't using ffmpegx to create the VIDEO_TS File, I was letting Toast do it, and it was re-encoding the file to be 4:3 rather than 16:9. With a VIDEO_TS file, Toast can't re-encode it.
